  • Disorientations

    Open Access•Sopheak Chann, A Beban et al.•ARTICLE•Antipode•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 54

In this article, we extend a theory of disorientations to reveal how attempts to fix and control both water and people are disrupting once‐fluid relationships between the Tonle Sap Lake and communities who have lived with‐on the lake for generations. Using ethnographic and participatory mapping methods, we examine the socio‐ecological dynamics that preceded and succeeded in the forced relocation of three floating communities in 2018. We argue tha…

  • Alternative development trajectories? A quantitative analysis of religion as a vector of mobility and education among the Hmong in upland Vietnam

  • Exports with equity? Land, income, and agrarian transition in Vietnam

    Timothy Gorman•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Development…•2022•References: 30

This paper uses survey data from the Mekong River Delta region of Vietnam to explore the equity implications of export-oriented agrarian transitions in two communities, one engaged in intensive rice agriculture and the other shrimp farming. The data show that shrimp aquaculture has brought greater inequality in the distribution of land, while generating more employment and economic opportunity and creating a more equitable distribution of income …

  • Underdeveloping the Mekong

    Timothy Gorman•ARTICLE•Sociology of Development•2020

Over the past century, the Mekong River Delta of southern Vietnam has undergone a series of transformations. In the early twentieth century, its forests and marshes were cleared for extensive rice production under French colonial rule; rice production was then intensified along Green Revolution lines under the post-colonial regimes of the 1960s to 1990s, before a dramatic shift toward export-oriented shrimp aquaculture since 2000. Drawing on arch…

  • From land grab to agrarian transition? Hybrid trajectories of accumulation and environmental change on the Cambodia-Vietnam border

    A Beban, Timothy Gorman•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2017•Cited by: 24•References: 30

In recent years, thousands of Vietnamese migrant farmers have crossed the border into Cambodia and leased land for export-oriented rice and shrimp production. Based on case studies in two Cambodian border provinces, we argue that these land transfers represent an intersection of broader processes of agrarian change that is re-shaping the Cambodian borderlands into a hybrid socio-ecological zone. Cambodian landlords and intermediaries use unequal …

  • Of migrants and middlemen

    Open Access•Timothy Gorman, A Beban•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Viewpoint•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 10

In a possible sign of a new trend in Southeast Asia, economic pressures are driving smallholder shrimp farmers from Vietnam's Mekong Delta across the Cambodian border in search of new land. Building from ethnographic research with Vietnamese shrimp farmers in Kampot province, Cambodia, this paper explores the structures, mechanisms and relations that facilitate and impede the ability of Vietnamese migrants to gain and maintain access to land in C…

  • The Khmer Lands of Vietnam

Philip Taylor, Timothy Gorman•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues in…•2015•Cited by: 1

The indigenous people of Southern Vietnam, the Khmer Krom, live in a region over which Vietnam and Cambodia have contesting claims. Regarded by nationalists in both countries with ambivalence and under pressure to change their way of life, they have coped with destructive wars, environmental re-engineering and nation-building policies by selectively engaging the world beyond, while continuing to draw upon local resources, self-help networks and u…

  • Moral Economy and the Upper Peasant

    Open Access•Timothy Gorman•ARTICLE•Journal of Agrarian Change•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 17

This paper examines how people mobilize around notions of distributive justice, or 'moral economies', to make claims to resources, using the process of post-socialist land privatization in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam as a case study. First, I argue that the region's history of settlement, production and political struggle helped to entrench certain normative beliefs around landownership, most notably in its population of semi-comm…
