  • "The "Art of Farming: Exploring the Link between Farm Culture and Maryland's Nutrient Management Policies

    Open Access•R Shawn Maloney, M Paolisso•ARTICLE•Culture & Agriculture•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 16

Policies and regulations designed to reduce nutrient runoff from Maryland farms into the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries would benefit from a better understanding of the cultural contexts of farming. Ethnographic work with Maryland farmers suggests that one of several key reasons why they are reluctant to comply with nutrient management regulations is because the regulations do not reflect an adequate understanding of the cultural aspects of f…

  • Building a Constituency for Applied Environmental Anthropology Through Research

    Michael Paolisso, R Shawn Maloney•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•2001

Late in the summer of 1997, three fish kills in Maryland tributaries to the Chesapeake Bay, linked to toxic blooms of the marine microorganism Pfiesteria piscicida, prompted widespread public and scientific concern. Pfiesteria is a recently discovered dinoflagellate, which, under ecological conditions not fully understood, produces toxins that cause fish mortality and morbidity. Direct human exposure to these toxins can result in skin and eye irr…

Existing hardware and software are now available that will allow you to record, transcribe (via keyboard and remote foot pedal), and analyze digital interview data. Where appropriate, digitally recorded interview data can be used to enhance the power of your PowerPoint…

  • Recognizing Farmer Environmentalism: Nutrient Runoff and Toxic Dinoflagellate Blooms in the Chesapeake Bay Region

    M Paolisso, R Shawn Maloney et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2000

Environmental anthropology can help make explicit the roles of beliefs, values, and experiences in the formation of cultural models. These cultural models allow individuals to understand complex environmental problems confronting their communities and threatening their livelihoods. We present results from an ongoing anthropological study of environment and pollution on Maryland's lower Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. We first focus on how fa…
