Domesticated Debt
This article examines microfinance debt among low- to middle-income-class women in contemporary Tunisia. Through an ethnography of microlending, the article shows the conditions under which Tunisian women come to rely on debt to put their children through school, build homes, and invest in small contraband businesses. Debt blurs the lines between life and work, a dynamic captured by the argument that debt constitutes part of the household; that i…
Revolutionary debtscapes
How are poor women politicized in the post-revolution city? I highlight women’s everyday experiences of homemaking, where the intimacy of the home shaped through debt becomes a terrain of politicization that spills outside the confines of domestic spaces. Connecting the literature on popular city-making in the Middle East and North Africa with the literature on social reproduction and microfinance debt, I draw on an ethnography of microlending in …
Urban Popular Economies
What is a life worth living and how is it concretely actualized by an urban majority making often unanticipated, unformatted uses of the urban to engender livelihoods in a dynamic and open-ended process? This is the key question undertaken in this collectively written piece. From the Fragments Up
Most studies of the Arab uprisings and their aftermaths focus on national-level political processes, neglecting changes at the municipal level. The few studies of municipalities that do exist tend to treat municipalities either as corruption-prone institutions exploited by local elites, or else as areas in need of intervention to make them function properly. We argue that municipalities are an overlooked site of political change—both spatially an…
What we talk about when we talk about decentralization? Insights from post-revolution Tunisia
Hybrid Regimes for Local Public Goods Provision
There is a growing recognition that the state is not the sole provider of “local public goods” such as water and education in the developing world. Mainstream approaches to the study of local public goods provision, however, have yet to incorporate these insights. We offer a descriptive typology of hybrid local public goods regimes, or systems in which both state and non-state actors contribute to provision. It emphasizes two dimensions: the type…
