Landscape Change and Geomedical Consequences in the Highlands of Sri Lanka (Ceylon)
The Central Highlands of Sri Lanka above 500 metres remained uninhabited until the British captured Kandy, the last stronghold of the Singhalese kingdom. The virgin forests of the mountainous interior were then explored and developed, first for coffee plantations and later for tea production. Tea proved to be the ideal crop and labour was required.
