  • Ethics in Qualitative Research

    Open Access•Anne Lazaraton•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2013

In simplest terms qualitative researchers attempt to understand people's lived experiences, patterns of discourse, and observable behaviors as they occur in natural settings. Such inquiry rarely results in numerical tallies, instead generating textual descriptions of unstructured data that are thought to represent phenomena of interest. These qualitative research data are analyzed in terms of data‐generated themes that point to one or more interp…

  • Discourse Analysis in Language Assessment

    Open Access•Anne Lazaraton•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2012

When second language (L2) learners take a language test, they are really only interested in one outcome: their scores. Likewise, language testers have been preoccupied with ensuring that these scores, which are the product of the assessment, are reliable and valid. In L2 performance assessment (where L2 learners produce speech or writing for assessment), the primary challenge is to ensure consistent ratings of language. Much work in oral language…

  • Gesture and Speech in the Vocabulary Explanations of One ESL Teacher

    Open Access•Anne Lazaraton•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2004•Cited by: 15

This article takes a microanalytic perspective on the speech and gestures used by one teacher of English as a second Language in her intensive English program classroom. Videotaped excerpts from her intermediate-level grammar course were transcribed to represent the speech, gesture, and other nonverbal behavior that accompanied unplanned explanations of vocabulary that arose during three focus-on-form lessons. The gesture classification system of…

  • Incidental Displays of Cultural Knowledge in the Nonnative-English-Speaking Teacher's Classroom

    Anne Lazaraton•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•2003•Cited by: 7

This article examines incidental cultural knowledge displays by two nonnative-English-speaking teachers (NNESTs) in their intensive English program classrooms. Surprisingly, until recently, NNESTs have received little empirical attention in the literature, even though questions continue to arise about their language competence, pedagogical knowledge, and cultural orientation. This study goes beyond existing work on the impressions, ree ections, a…

  • Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches to Discourse Analysis

    Open Access•Anne Lazaraton•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Applied…•2002

This chapter summarizes 16 empirical studies that employ quantitative and/or qualitative discourse analytic techniques published in applied linguistics journals over the last five years. These studies tend to analyze spoken discourse in formal contexts, produced by both adults and children who are native and nonnative speakers of English. Unfortunately, all studies focus only on English discourse, which suggests that analyses of discourse in othe…

  • Current Trends in Research Methodology and Statistics in Applied Linguistics

    Anne Lazaraton•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•2000•Cited by: 12

The past decade has seen second of of the research in applied linguistics, as evidenced by the increasing prominence of qualitative research as both subject of theoretical discussion and method for conducting empirical work (Lazaraton, 1995). The first coming of age was remarked on by Henning (1986), who noted sharp increase in the number of quantitative articles in both TESOL Quarterly and Language Learning from 1970 to 1985, which he viewed as …

  • Interlocutor support in oral proficiency interviews

    Open Access•Anne Lazaraton•ARTICLE•Language Testing•1996

Despite a considerable amount of research on oral proficiency testing over the last 20 years, little is understood about the interview process itself and the spoken interaction that takes place in it. This article presents a qualitative analysis of one aspect of interviewer-candidate interaction, namely, the types of linguistic and interactional support that the native speaker interlocutor provides to the non-native speaker candidate in a one-on-…

  • Qualitative Research in Applied Linguistics

    Anne Lazaraton•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•1995•Cited by: 5

This article describes the status of qualitative research in applied linguistics and ESOL. It identifies trends by reporting on an informal survey of published journal articles, highlighting relevant published qualitative studies and research methods texts, and relating the views of research methodologists working within and outside the qualitative tradition. Several of the unresolved, persistent issues raised are progress toward a definition of …

    Anne Lazaraton•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•1991•Cited by: 2

We are rather raising three central questions for the profession to address, consider, and debate. No syllogisms of the sort Hoye puts forth underlie our article. Although social equality may well contribute to language learning, we are not so naive as to think that mainstreaming, in and of itself, will result in social equality. Social equality will be achieved only when all individuals share equal political and economic access. The school, alon…

This article reports the results of a survey of 121 professionals in applied linguistics about their knowledge of and attitudes toward statistics and empirical research. Respondents were asked to rate their knowledge of statistical concepts and procedures, to react to statements about the role of statistics and the importance of quantitative methods, and to respond to research situations where statistics are often used. The survey results indicat…
