Utility of the morphological scoring of costal cartilage ossification in age estimation of adult Egyptians using multidetector computed tomography
Age estimation of adults is a challenging procedure in forensic practice. Inspired by the previous work by Chinese scholars, we established population-specific age estimation models from the osseous and calcified projections (OCPs) of costal cartilages, using three-dimensional volume-rendering technique. A total of 168 clinical CT scans (2 mm slice thickness) were used to develop the sex-specific age prediction models from a sample of Egyptians, …
Purkait’s Triangle Revisited
Identification of unknown remains recovered from marine and terrestrial locations is a significant humanitarian problem. This investigation proposes a simple method applicable to fragmentary femora for a more refined level of ancestry and/or sex estimation. To that end, we re-examined Purkait's triangle which involves three inter-landmark distances between the traction epiphyses and the articular rim of femoral head. A large sample ( n = 584) fro…
Reconstruction of Femur Length Using Epiphyseal and Diaphyseal Diameters in Contemporary Egyptian Sample, with Application to Ancient Egyptians
Inferences in bioarchaeology and forensic contexts require mathematical stature estimation using long bone lengths. This study aimed to identify predictors of femur length (FL) from epiphyseal and diaphyseal width measurements that are not bound to assumptions of sex or laterality. To compute linear regression models, both standard and new measurements around the diaphyseal dominant nutrient foramina (NF) were collected on modern femora (n = 64) …
Sample specific sex estimation method using parameters around dominant nutrient foramina in unknown femur bones collection of contemporary Egyptians
Because there is no widely accepted sexing method of fragmented femoral diaphyses, we argue that the diaphyseal diameters and circumference around nutrient foramina (NF) have comparable sex discrimination capacity to their mid‐shaft counterparts. Construction of reliable reference sample ( n = 61, 29 males and 32 females) using the undocumented Alexandria University Osteological Collection was contingent upon consistent sex estimation of the epip…
