Disputing Authorship
This article proposes a conversation on the limits and possibilities of collectivizing the way in which we generate and inscribe knowledge within the terms of a political economy of knowledge production and circulation regulated by hierarchies of academic and non-academic classifications, as well as those that demarcate centres and peripheries domestically and internationally through racial–gendered distributions of authority. To this end, it exp…

From Binary to Intersectional to Imbricated Approaches
This article proposes a re-reading of the problem of gender, or as it has been put, more often than not, 'the woman problem,' that resists the reproduction of modern/colonial systems of governance and their political norms, standards, ideals and pacts. In turn, it seeks to open pathways to dialogue with, rather than import, conceptions of gender that respond to the terms through which modern/colonial societies have been forged on the continent of…
Reflections on institutional and paradigmatic changes in tourism geography
Tourism Destination Evolution
Outlining the need for fresh perspectives on change in tourism, this book offers a theoretical overview and empirical examples of the potential synergies of applying evolutionary economic geography
Practicing Sustainability
Aspects of the ordinary in everyday dressing remain elusive to fashion studies, meaning the life of what Judy Attfield calls 'design in the lower case' escapes notice. In this article, the authors assemble a practice-oriented perspective to illuminate 'wearing' as an outcome of sets of commonplace and routine practices related to dressing, that wear a garment in and out over time, and enhance the visibility of clothing use. The central example is…
Mindful deviation in creating a governance path towards sustainability in resort destinations
Drawing on recent work in evolutionary economic geography, we focus on path creation as the framework for understanding how, in a resort destination context, the shift from growth models to ones based on principles of sustainability are evolving. Path creation emphasizes the power of human agency by recognizing the influence of entrepreneurs in shaping their environments. In the case study of the mountain resort of Whistler, British Columbia, we …
Handbook of Research Methods in Tourism
In the last two decades the application of quantitative techniques in the study of the tourism phenomenon has gained momentum. This can be traced back to several factors. The most prominent is perhaps the fact that, as the reliance of destinations on tourism has grown and the industry expanded globally, more resources have been devoted to the collection of quantitative data and the maintenance of tourism data sets. This may have encouraged resear…
Moving to Integration? The Origins of Chicago’s Gautreaux Program and the Limits of Voucher-Based Housing Mobility
This article explores the origins and implementation of Chicago’s Gautreaux Assisted Housing Program, which used federal vouchers to move poor African American families to majority-white neighborhoods in the Chicago suburbs between 1976 and 1997. The program grew out of discrimination lawsuits by public housing tenants against the Chicago Housing Authority and Department of Housing and Urban Development. The plaintiffs originally sought the const…
Travelling down the road to postdisciplinarity? Reflections of a tourism geographer
Like many other forms of scholarship in geography, tourism geography has evolved as a distinct subfield of inquiry within the discipline, although the contributions of tourism geographers are perhaps more readily acknowledged in the multidisciplinary realm of tourism studies. I trace the evolving relationship of tourism geography to both the discipline of geography and to the field of tourism studies. In doing so, I reflect on such influences as …
From Growth Machine to Growth Management
In North America, competition for land has often been conceptualized as being driven by growth machines whereby those with common stakes in development form coalitions of local elites to influence government in pursuit of their goals. The inequitable benefits of growth have been challenged more recently by the introduction of growth-management practices that heighten the role of local residents in land-use decisions. In this paper, the concepts o…

A Framework for Evaluating the Planning and Development of a New Community
The planning and development of new communities is a challenging and expensive venture. This article describes the framework and methods employed to evaluate the use of socially sensitive planning in the development of Tumbler Ridge, a new coal-mining community in northeastern British Columbia. The authors describe how a set of social principles and design elements were used to develop an overall framework and detailed strategy for the evaluation…
