  • Toward an understanding of youth in community governance: Policy priorities and research directions

    Open Access•Shepherd Zeldin, Linda A Camino et al.•ARTICLE•Análise Psicológica•2012

For more than a decade, many researchers and practitioners have endorsed a “positive youth development” approach, which views adolescents as active contributors to their own development and as assets to their communities. As part of this shift, youth are increasingly being invited to engage in community governance. Youth–adult partnerships (Y‐APs) for organizational and community change represent an innovative practice in the United States. Innovations are typically a challenge to implement, so it is not surprising that youth organizations are seeking guidance on how to adopt and sustain Y‐APs. This article brings contemporary scholarship to bear on the issue. Through a synthesis of theory, research, and field‐based data, it identifies six managerial guidel…

  • Pitfalls and promising practices of youth–adult partnerships: An evaluator's reflections

    Open Access•Linda A Camino, Linda Camino•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2005•Cited by: 31•References: 7

Youth–adult partnerships (Y‐APs) are an innovation being used increasingly as a key strategy for promoting youth development, as well as for building strong programs and communities. This article discusses three pitfalls that can undermine their effectiveness: (1) the assumption that youth should do everything of importance; (2) the belief that adults should “get out of the way,” and give up power, and (3) the focus on youth as the marked categor…

  • From Periphery to Center: Pathways for Youth Civic Engagement in the Day-To-Day Life of Communities

Linda A Camino, Linda Camino et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Developmental Science•2002

Inclusive participation is a primary component of civil society. Yet opportunities and pathways for youth civic engagement remain limited for youth. This limitation has been significantly influenced by the daily segregation of youth from adults, negative public beliefs about adolescents, and stereotypes, both negative and overly romantic, about the capabilities of adolescents. However, this state of affairs is being challenged by youth and adults…

    Open Access•Linda A Camino•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•1995•Cited by: 7•References: 6

The study of youth development urges a consideration of context, yet rarely are "intolerance" and "multiculturalism" posed as major research variables. This article offers a conceptualframework to identify the daily interpersonal and organizationalprocesses through which intolerance is directed at young people, affecting their exposure to ongoing developmental supports and opportunities. This article draws on data collected from the experiences o…

    Linda A Camino•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•1989

The experience of nerves among women in a low-income Black neighborhood was examined. Research conducted in the neighborhood revealed nerves as a formal classification of folk illness linked with life stress, yet in-depth interviews with a purposeful sample of 24 residents showed that a greater manifestation of nerves among women contributes to tendencies among family members to ignore the severity of its symptoms and to equate experiences of ner…
