I am anthropologist - But where is the field? On fieldwork, intimacy, and home
This article was prompted by a question: how can one be anthropologist when access to the field is denied? Drawing on the experiences of the author, who experienced a number of losses including access to the field during the COVID-19 pandemic, it shines a light on how, in a context of anthropology at home, intimate knowledge and memory fragments can be used to draw the field nearer when physical access is denied. In doing so, it reflects on how s…
Prologue
The primary objective of this book is to provoke a sustained consideration on the part of anthropologists of the ways in which the self can be a resource in doing ethnography, both in the field and in the study. The project began, as so many do, in the conversations between the two editors, who felt that, despite a plethora of writing on the periphery of this key issue, there was no text that addressed directly the question 'To what extent can the…

Actually existing post-socialism: Producing ideological others in eastern Germany
In this article I will argue that we need to continue working with and through the notion of post-socialism as long as local populations are treated as transitional. That is, as long as policy-makers, politicians, managers and academics engage with local people in the belief that their dispositions, behaviours and personhoods in the democratic present are a result of their own or their predecessors' life in socialism, and as long as they develop …
Student engagement in the management of accelerated change
The prospect of the increase in tuition fees in England from 2012 pulled learning and teaching into the limelight as universities sought to safeguard student recruitment and league table positions in an envisioned new era of increased market competition. As each institution sought to market itself to potential students with a specific learning and teaching ‘offer’, local subject areas faced increasing demands for quality monitoring as well as a h…

The localAufarbeitung(re-working) of the SED-dictatorship: Governing Memory to Save the Future
The East German past has been the focus of much debate and scholarly work in Germany since unification in 1990. The government-sponsored discourse on this past, Vergangenheitsaufarbeitung, the 're-working of the past', presents the GDR as the 'SED-dictatorship'. In constructing the East German past as part of Germany's dictatorial past the discourse of Aufarbeitung legitimises German unification and the transition to democracy. This paper explore…
Incoherence matters: Life-stories after fundamental regime-change
Life-stories are usually seen as showing considerable coherence even where they include turning points. More recent work has in contrast noted that “living” or “small narratives” do not follow this rule but contrastingly enable the pondering of unresolved life-events helping to develop understanding. This potential is particularly valuable in contexts of fundamental regime-change where changes of the value-system, such as after transition from st…

Intense Paradoxes of Memory: Researching Moral Questions About Remembering the Socialist Past
In 2007 two researchers embarked upon a project on the “social construction of the socialist past in eastern Germany”. The project sought to explore how the socialist past is remembered today, and the moral ambiguities condensed in memories. This is particularly relevant in eastern Germany, where debates about how to interpret the socialist past continue to strive. However, it soon became apparent that doing such an ethnographic project is no eas…
Being “East German” or Being “At Home in Eastern Germany”? Identity as Experience and as Rhetoric
An apparent resurgence of East German identity aroused much scholarly interest in recent years whilst it is contested in the German public discourse. Scholars see the phenomenon as based in experiences of domination and cultural devaluation; German scholars focus on East-West German differences, and the public discourse refers to the continuation of the “[Berlin] Wall in people's minds.” When conducting field research in Saxony-Anhalt in 2001, I …

Difficult stories: Public discourse and narrative identity in Eastern Germany
Whilst former political prisoners of the socialist state are considered to be important witnesses of the past socialist rule by governmental authorities, able to testify about the 'regime', the eastern German public seems rather uninviting to their telling their life-stories. At the interstices of a demand for talking and a refusal of being listened to, the creation of narratives which would serve to portray one's experiencesis difficult. Followi…

‘Only if they pay me…’: Ideals and pragmatics of post-graduates who teach
Post-graduate tutors form a common part of teaching staff at many departments across the UK. Anyone who has ever been in the position of trying to finish the Ph.D. and teaching simultaneously will remember that life seemed rather difficult at the time. This article explores why post-graduate life appears so complicated, what place teaching duties have in this complexity, and what implications this position has for the teaching post-graduates are …
