  • The Massif Central as a Centre of Roman Brass Production? New Geochemical Data of the So‐Called Hemmoor Buckets

Open Access•Tobias Skowronek, Michael Bode et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026

New analytical data of the so‐called Hemmoor buckets, a group of brass vessels from the Roman period of the 2nd to 3rd century ad that are widespread throughout central and eastern Europe, show considerable similarities with the polymetallic Cévennes ore deposits in south‐eastern France in terms of their geochemical characteristics and lead isotope ratios. The consistency of the analytical data collected in this work with those of brass ingots fr…

  • Roman lead ingots from Macedonia-the Augustan shipwreck of Comacchio (prov. Ferrara, Italy) and the reinterpretation of its lead ingots' provenance deduced from lead isotope analysis

    Open Access•Michael Bode, Norbert Hanel et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 25

A shipwreck of the 3rd/2nd decade BC found near Comacchio (prov. Ferrara, Italy) in 1980 contained not only well-preserved technical equipment and commercial goods but also 102 Roman lead ingots. Since then, the origin of the ingots has been intensively discussed. Domergue et al. (2012) connected the epigraphic elements with lead isotope analyses and favored the southeastern Spanish lead ore mines being the source of the lead metal. An origin fro…
