• Sketch for a Sociology of Sociological Self-Analyses

Gerardo Ienna, Carmelo Lombardo et al.•ARTICLE•SOCIOLOGIA E RICERCA SOCIALE•2022•References: 7

This essay analyzes one of the major expressions of the sociological critique of sociological reasoning, the objectivation of the subject of objectivation, who should analyze the sociohistorical conditions of possibility of the very act of objectivation. Though Bourdieu's invitation to a reflexive sociology of sociology has not been widely accepted and put into practice, the authors argue that its actual application actually brings about consiste…

  • Is there a canon in this class

Barbara Grüning, Marco Santoro•ARTICLE•International Review of Sociology•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 58

The article addresses issues of interpretation and selection as they are dealt with in current debates on the nature, the content, and the effects of processes and mechanisms of canonization in sociology. It makes a case for a more empirically grounded and sociologically sensitive approach to these issues, drawing from recent research programmes in digital humanities (e.g. distant reading) and insisting on the benefits of cumulative case historie…

  • Mafiacraft, witchcraft, statecraft, or the politics of mafia knowledge and the knowledge of mafia politics

    Open Access•Marco Santoro•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 7

While praising Deborah Puccio-Den's proposal for its invitation to a more reflexive kind of mafia studies, capable of addressing epistemological and even ontological issues typically assumed but rarely dealt with in the literature, I suggest developing her "mafiacraft" framework along two research lines: (1) a focus on the "craft" dimension of the "mafia" and of mafiosi as engaged in work activities and embedded in (even) a (moral) division of la…

  • Bourdieu’s International Circulation

Marco Santoro, Andrea Gallelli et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Pierre Bourdieu•2018

An influential figure in the French intellectual field since the 1960s, Pierre Bourdieu (1930–2002) is increasingly influential also—and probably mainly—on a global scale. In fact, the circulation of Bourdieu’s ideas and concepts outside of France greatly exceeds their transatlantic importation, both temporally and spatially. His works circulated in different parts of “old Europe” well before their renown in the United States, especially in count…

  • Putting Circuits Into Fields, or How Italian Canzone Gained the Status of ‘Art’ in the Music Market

    Open Access•Marco Santoro•ARTICLE•European Societies•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 10

This article shows how deep moral issues can impinge upon popular culture without this losing its commercial appeal, a process made possible by the role of consecrating institutions in the music market. The article focuses on the fabrication and establishment of a new genre within Italian musical culture and music market, the so-called canzone d'autore, and it is set after the suicide in 1967 of singer-songwriter Luigi Tenco during the most impor…

    Marco Santoro•ARTICLE•SOCIOLOGIA E RICERCA SOCIALE•2013

L'articolo avanza una diagnosi dello stato della sociologia accademica italiana e discute le potenzialità di innovazione scientifica e professionale del sistema di valutazione della ricerca introdotto recentemente in Italia

  • From Bourdieu to Cultural Sociology

    Open Access•Marco Santoro•ARTICLE•Cultural Sociology•2011•Cited by: 10•References: 38

This paper offers an account of Bourdieu's rise to sociological 'stardom' in the last 30 years, giving special attention to the transnational dimensions of this process. It discusses the scope and relevance of his work to the field (in the making) of cultural sociology, showing how he contributed to its current form. It also presents the articles which constitute the contents of the journal special issue. The paper insists on the importance of as…

An Interview with one of the founders of British Cultural Studies, introduced by a text which contextualizes both the interview and the author (and British Cultural Studies). The issues discussed are the three in the title: commodification, symbolic resistance and cultural reproduction. But also creativity and methological issues in the analysis of culture

  • Producing Cultural Sociology

    Open Access•Marco Santoro•ARTICLE•Cultural Sociology•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 12

The name of Richard A. Peterson is associated with at least two major issues in the field of sociology: first, the production of culture approach to cultural analysis, probably still his most relevant contribution to contemporary sociology; and second, the cultural omnivore hypothesis, which currently is a central theme in empirical research on cultural consumption and stratification. Both these issues (and the first in particular) are discussed …

  • Culture As (And After) Production

    Open Access•Marco Santoro•ARTICLE•Cultural Sociology•2008•Cited by: 14•References: 73

This paper discusses the contribution of Richard A. Peterson to the discipline of sociology in general, and the sociological study of cultural production and consumption more particularly. It illustrate the main tenets of the 'production of culture' perspective proposed by Peterson from the early 1970s onwards, its intellectual genealogy, and the impact this perspective has had on the development of the sociology of culture in different countries…

  • The Italian Way(s). A special issue on Italian popular music

    Open Access•Goffredo Plastino, Marco Santoro•ARTICLE•Popular Music•2007

Popular music studies have experienced a strange fate in Italy. After a promising beginning in the 1970s and the early 1980s (with the direct contribution by musicians and scholars like Franco Fabbri and Umberto Fiori to the new intellectual formation), a situation of stasis followed. The latter was characterised by the presence of individual important voices but without the support of a constituency strong enough to guarantee in Italy the instit…

  • Second language acquisition of Italian accusative and dative clitics

    Open Access•Marco Santoro•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This experimental study investigates the acquisition of Italian accusative and dative clitics by English adult speakers. These pronouns are non-existent in English. Results from a grammaticality judgement task show that Italian accusative and dative clitics develop slowly but gradually in Italian second language (L2) grammars. Interestingly, the placement properties appear to develop earlier than their case properties. The possible implications o…

  • Authors and Rappers

    Open Access•Marco Santoro, Marco Solaroli•ARTICLE•Popular Music•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 2

By offering a historical reconstruction of the process of contextualisation of hip hop culture in Italy over the last fifteen years, the article assesses the current status of canzone d'autore and its changing configuration under the impact of rap music. From a theoretical point of view, the conceptual framework combines the sociological definition of 'field of cultural production' elaborated by Pierre Bourdieu with the related literature on soci…

  • The Tenco effect. Suicide, San Remo, and the social construction of the canzone d'autore

    Marco Santoro•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 14

Canzone d'autore is an indigenous expression that has no precise equivalent in other languages. Its social use identifies a genre of popular song that presuppose the existence of an ‘autore’ taken in its most vigorous sense, meaning a ‘creator’, an ‘artist’– but how did this claim to artistry originate? How did it insinuate itself into the world of song, a genre that by definition belongs to the realm of what is traditionally called in Italian ‘m…
