  • Wadi Bakht revisited

    Open Access•Jörg Linstädter, Stefan Kröpelin•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2004•Cited by: 8•References: 10

Geoarchaeological and chronological evidence from the remote Gilf Kebir Plateau in southwest Egypt suggests a new model for the influence of early and mid‐Holocene precipitation regimes on land‐use strategies of prehistoric settlers in what is now the center of the largest hyperarid area on earth. We hypothesize that the quantitatively higher, daytime, monsoon summer rainfall characteristic of the early Holocene (9300–5400 14 C yr B.P./8400–4300 …

  • On the Periphery of Kerma - The Handessi Horizon in Wadi Hariq, Northwestern Sudan

Friederike Jesse, Stefan Kröpelin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2004•Cited by: 10

Wadi Hariq is a complex valley system in the Northwest Sudan about 400 km west of the Nile. Stratigraphic investigations provide new data on the environmental and climatic history of the present-day hyperarid centre of the southeastern Sahara. Archaeological work there only started at the end of the 1990s, with a survey and excavations carried out as part of the multidisciplinary research project ACACIA of the University of Cologne. To date, 104 …

  • Charophyte remains from Wadi Howar as evidence for deep mid-Holocene freshwater lakes in the eastern Sahara of Northwest Sudan

    Open Access•Stefan Kröpelin, Ingeborg Soulié‐Märsche et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1991

Field research in the eastern Sahara (Northwest Sudan) revealed extensive early- to mid-Holocene lake marl deposits bearing gyrogonites of Charophytes (green algae, stoneworts) along the lower course of the Wadi Howar, an extinct tributary to the Nile. The Charophyte flora of a paleolake southwest of Jebel Rahib (17°31′N/26°52′E) dated prior to 4720 ± 110 yr B.P. is mainly composed of the ecologically sensitive species Nitellopsis obtusa which in…
