The Protestants of Loudun
This paper analyses the subtle changes that took place in the Reformed Protestant community of Loudun as a result of local and state persecution during the period of the Edict of Nantes (1598–1685). The reaction to persecution manifested itself not only in a growing reticence among Loudun’s Protestants to broadcast their allegiance to their faith, but also an ability to maintain significant family patrimony and cohesive family compacts.
