Wrappings of power
A well-preserved burial, discovered during peat clearing on Langwell Farm in Strath Oykel, Easter Ross, consisted of a stone cist that held the skeleton of a woman who had died in 2200–1960 cal bc. Although the cist contents were disturbed and partly removed before archaeological investigation took place, the burial rite can be interpreted to some extent. The woman, who died in her late 20s, had been wrapped in brown cattle hide, and wooden and w…

A Pictish burial and Late Norse/Medieval settlement at Sangobeg, Durness, Sutherland
Salvage excavation was carried out on an archaeological site, discovered during the North Sutherland Coastal Zone Assessment Survey in 1998, in dunes at Sangobeg, near Durness in northern Sutherland. The excavation, conducted in 2000, uncovered the fragmentary remains of probable Norse-period settlement, including stone walling, a hearth and occupation deposits that had been truncated by erosion. Sealed beneath the Norse-period remains was the bu…
St Trolla's Chapel, Kintradwell, Sutherland
The chance discovery of burials at the traditional site of St Trolla's Chapel, Kintradwell, near Brora, led to their rescue excavation and subsequent analysis. The results confirm that this was the site of a chapel in the Medieval period, with radiocarbon dates indicating the use of the burial ground from the earlier 11th to the 16th or 17th centuries. The skeletal remains reveal something of the personal histories of the occupants, with evidence…
A Medieval Burial from Graham Street, Leith, Edinburgh
An archaeological excavation was carried out at Graham Street, Leith, Edinburgh by Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division (GUARD) as part of the Historic Scotland Human Remains Call-off Contract following the discovery of human remains during machine excavation of a foundation trench for a new housing development. Excavation demonstrated that the burial was that of a young adult male who had been interred in a supine position with hi…

The excavation and survey of prehistoric enclosures at Blackshouse Burn, Lanarkshire
Reports on work carried out between 1985 and 1986 at a large banked enclosure with an associated smaller enclosure, on the edge of an ancient bog. It is suggested that the site had both ritual and domestic associations. There are specialist contributions on: `Soils' by David Jordan (35--7); `Pollen analysis' by Susan Ramsay (37--40); `Pottery' by Olivia Lelong (40); `Worked stone' by Tony Pollard (40--1); and `Dendrochronological analysis of thre…
Excavation of a Bronze Age ring cairn at Cloburn Quarry, Cairngryffe Hill, Lanarkshire
Reports on work carried out over a number of seasons beginning in 1986 which revealed a complex funerary structure in the form of a pre-cairn monument with a central scoop, encircled by rings of timber posts, cremation pits and stone, followed by later pit and stone arrangements containing cremations. There are specialist contributions on: `The cremated bone' by Julie A Roberts (119--23); `The pottery' by Olivia Lelong (123--30) which includes Ea…
