  • Regretting Reforestation: Discourses of Landscape and Culture Change in Mountain‐Farming Norway

    Open Access•Michael Wroblewski, Thea R Strand•ARTICLE•Culture Agriculture Food and…•2026•References: 24

The rural district of Valdres in central Norway is home to one of the largest intact transhumant farming zones in Europe. The low‐mountain stølslandskap , or “summer mountain farming landscape,” a singular, sub‐polar socionature, is undergoing significant economic and environmental transition. As transhumant farming decreases and anthropogenic climate change progresses, the culturally treasured stølslandskap is becoming reforested and effectively…

  • Teaching Transcription for Social Justice in Linguistic Anthropology

    Open Access•Thea R Strand, Michael Wroblewski•ARTICLE•Teaching and Learning Anthropology•2025

The careful transcription of socially-occurring speech can be usefully incorporated into undergraduate classes in linguistic anthropology through in-class practice, discussion, and, especially, as a formal assignment. Teaching transcription-a key method for professional linguistic anthropologists-is particularly effective for engaging students in active learning of key disciplinary principles, as well as promoting critical (self-)awareness of, an…

Michael Wroblewski, Jim Wilce et al.•BOOK•Language Revitalization and…•2021•Cited by: 1

"Investigating the efforts of the Kichwa of Tena, Ecuador to reverse language shift to Spanish, this book examines the ways in which indigenous language can be revitalized and how creative bilingual forms of discourse can reshape the identities and futures of local populations. Based on deep ethnographic fieldwork among urban, periurban, and rural Kichwa communities, Michael Wroblewski explores adaptations to culture contact, language revitalizat…

  • Practice(s) and Practice‐Based Approaches

    Open Access•Michael Wroblewski•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2020

Practices refer to all manner of actions, enacted by human agents, which are embedded in and constitutive of social structures and power relations. Practices are directed toward active presence in a social world that both constrains and enables them. Practice‐based approaches trace the processes by which knowledge, signs, institutions, and power relations emerge, are sustained, and change over time through the actions of individuals and collectiv…

  • Inscribing indigeneity: Ethnolinguistic authority in the linguistic landscape of Amazonian Ecuador

    Michael Wroblewski•ARTICLE•Multilingua•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 55

This article takes a linguistic anthropological approach to analyzing multilingualism in the linguistic landscape of the Amazonian city of Tena, Ecuador, a key locus of indigenous Kichwa language revitalization, identity formation, and politics. Following recent scholarly reconsiderations of multilingual linguistic landscapes as sites of ideological contestation and performative display, I seek to expand on the foundational concept of ethnolingui…

  • Public Indigeneity, Language Revitalization, and Intercultural Planning in a Native Amazonian Beauty Pageant

    Open Access•Michael Wroblewski•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2014•Cited by: 21•References: 51

According to its 2008 Constitution, Ecuador is a "plurinational" and "intercultural" state. In this article, I examine the creative expounding of constitutional plurinationality-interculturality by indigenous Kichwa activists in the city of Tena in the Amazonian province of Napo. Through a popular annual native beauty pageant, members of a rising, elite sector of professional indigenous intellectuals draw on the rhetoric of constitutional intercu…

  • Amazonian Kichwa Proper: Ethnolinguistic Domain in Pan-Indian Ecuador

    Open Access•Michael Wroblewski•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistic Anthropology•2012•Cited by: 15•References: 34

Pan-Indian organizing and language standardization are key strategies for indigenous activists advancing cultural legitimacy in the contemporary Latin American sociopolitical order. Planned ethnolinguistic unification by Kichwa activists in Ecuador is paradoxically fueling ethnogenesis among Amazonian Kichwas who see language standardization as a threat to a uniquely indigenous identity that is manifest in local Kichwa dialect. This essay examine…
