Unlocking potential: Investigating the prolonged impact of formal childcare intensity on non-cognitive skills
Policymakers often cite positive outcomes from early childcare programmes, yet the evidence is mixed and largely based on enrolment effects for children aged 3–5. This study examines the intensity of childcare, measured in hours, for children under age 3, focusing on impacts on non-cognitive skills from ages 3 to 14. Despite policy focus on subsidised childcare hours, this question has received little attention. Using a nationally representative …
Prediction of fat-free mass and fat mass from bioimpedance spectroscopy and anthropometry: A validation study in 7- to 9-year-old Kuwaiti children
Objective: Childhood obesity is increasing in many countries, including Kuwait. Currently, adiposity is most commonly assessed from simple anthropometric measurements, e.g. height and weight or combined as body mass index (BMI). This is despite these surrogate measurements being poor indices of adiposity. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a popular method for the assessment of body composition providing a measurement of adiposity as absol…
Study Protocol - Accurate assessment of kidney function in Indigenous Australians: Aims and methods of the eGFR Study
We have successfully managed several operational challenges within this multi-centre complex clinical research project performed across remote North, Western and Central Australia. It seems unlikely that a single correction factor (similar to that for African-Americans) to the equation for estimated glomerular filtration rate will prove appropriate or practical for Indigenous Australians. However, it may be that a modification of the equation in …

Changes in body water distribution during treatment with inhaled steroid in pre-school children
Decreased growth during inhaled steroid treatment seems to partly reflect generalized changes in body water
Reliability of multiple frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis: An intermachine comparison
The technical reliability (i.e., interinstrument and interoperator reliability) of three SEAC-swept frequency bioimpedance monitors was assessed for both errors of measurement and associated analyses. In addition, intraoperator and intrainstrument variability was evaluated for repeat measures over a 4-hour period. The measured impedance values from a range of resistance-capacitance circuits were accurate to within 3% of theoretical values over a …

Psychometric Assessment of Motives for Using Cocaine in Men with Substance Use Disorders
A 15-item self-report questionnaire from a previous study of social, coping, and enhancement motives for drinking was reworded to assess motives for using cocaine. Data from 121 cocaine users indicated satisfactory reliabilities for the 3 new 5-item scales, and the fit of a 3-factor structure in confirmatory factor analysis was comparable to that of the earlier study of drinking motives. Removal of 4 items substantially improved the fit to the 3-…

Validation of an MMPI Short Form with Literate and Illiterate Patients
An Improved Readability Form (IRF) of the MMPI was orally administered to 100 literate and 119 illiterate patients, and 140 literate patients were given the full MMPI with standard instructions. Profile comparisons of the MMPI with the IRF given to literates or extracted from the full MMPI yielded only small differences. The much larger differences in the IRF profiles of the illiterates were removed by controlling statistically for sex, race, age…
Presentation Rate Effects in Transfer from Serial to Paired-Associate Learning
The effect of presentation rate, 1 or 3 seconds per item, upon the formation of interitem associations in serial learning was investigated by examining transfer from serial to paired-associate (PA) learning. The influence of PA presentation rate, 2:2, 2:6, 6:2, or 6:6, was also assessed. With total time held constant, serial learning proceeded more rapidly at the 3-second rate, thus providing a violation in total time invariance. Furthermore, tra…
A Test of the Associative Chaining Hypothesis by Serial-Recall and Serial-Anticipation Procedures
A test of the associative chaining hypothesis was performed with the use of the serial-recall and the serial-anticipation procedures. Ss were 120 male and female freshman college students. A task involving transfer from a serial to a paired-associate list was used to test the associative chaining hypothesis. Half the pairs in the paired-associate list were made of successively learned items from the serial list (experimental pairs), and half were…
The Effects of Postresponse Stimulus Duration upon the Short-Term Retention of Verbal Discrimination Pairs
Sixty Ss were tested for short-term retention of verbal discrimination pairs consisting of three-place consonant syllables (CCCs) with high intrapair formal similarity. Each pair was shown twice with successive presentations separated by either zero, 1, 2, or 3 interpolated pairs. Different groups received either a zero-, 1-, or 3-second postresponse stimulus duration (PSD), duration of exposure of the stimulus pair following a button-pressing re…
