The Nature of the Homily in the Corpus of Origen
In this article, I problematise the scholarly understanding of Origen's exegetical homilies, typically understood as condensed and simplified versions of his exegetical commentaries for a mixed audience. This assessment was necessarily based mainly on the homiletic material in Latin translation by Rufinus and Jerome, who had condensed and rearranged the material. However, the 2012 discovery of Codex Monancensis 314, Origen's Homilies on the Psalm…
The Pastoral Usefulness of Female Scriptural Speech in Origen of Alexandria
In this article, I wish to build on the little work previously done on the theme of Origen and women by focusing on Origen’s exegetical treatment of the speech uttered by a selection of female scriptural characters. I focus on their speech as a way of applying the observations made by Mark Randall James in his 2021 monograph, Learning the Language of Scripture: Origen, Wisdom, and the Logic of Interpretation, concerning one of Origen’s primary ex…
Origen's Sources of Exegetical Authority
In this paper, I examine several sources of authority to which Origen laid claim as he set about the task of interpreting scripture. On occasion, in both his commentaries and his homilies, Origen provided accounts of his access to three different, though connected sources of authority that contributed to his self-presentation as an expert interpreter. These sources are as follows: 1) participation in the lineage of the apostles, particularly his …
Narrating ‘Home’ in Early Christian Biography
In this paper, I provide a close examination of early Christian biographical sources through the heuristic lens of “home studies”, tracing a thread from the New Testament Gospels to martyrdom texts, the apocryphal Acts literature, Eusebius’ biography of Origen in his Church History, and finally, Athanasius’ Life of Antony. I demonstrate that the lens of home allows us to see that in each of these discrete groups of texts, Christ’s call to discipl…

Theodoret of Cyrus and His Exegetical Predecessors
In this article, I examine the biblical commentary prefaces of Theodoret of Cyrus (d. 458), particularly the exegete’s presentation of his self-image in relation to his predecessors in the Greek exegetical tradition. I contend that in addition to its introductory function, the biblical commentary preface provided the context in which the exegete could rhetorically style himself vis-à-vis the prior tradition, articulating his own skills, credentia…
Editor’s Introduction to the Topical Issue “Reception of the Biblical and Patristic Heritage
In the past decades, the Bible's reception, which tends to include both its interpretation and its use, has drawn considerable scholarly attention, particularly, though not exclusively, in the English-speaking world.Indeed, most major presses in the fields of theology and religious studies now have at least one series or substantial handbook dedicated to the reception of the Bible, such as The Oxford Handbook of the Reception History of the Bible…
