A Cross-Boundary Dialogue in Need: Racial, Ethnic, or Folk Groups
As we enter the twenty-first century, reflexive approaches to the history of folklore studies around the world, along with the antiracist and decolonizing efforts in academic studies in general, have led to a series of paradigmatic shifts away from the Eurocentric systems of defining genre, folk, racial group, and identity. What remains to be essential, yet to be fully subverted, is the concept and practice of "racial/ethnic groups" that is still…

(Folk)Life, Interrupted: Challenges for Fieldwork, Empathy, and Public Discourse in the Age of Trump
This article argues that the political and social developments of the current American moment represent a crisis for folkloristics and other humanistic fields that goes well beyond pragmatic concerns. It makes the case that, in response, we must conduct (or reinvigorate) sustained conversations about how we as scholars of folk cultures should engage with our subjects and with the public more broadly
A higher degree of scholarship’: Pagans and the language of scholarly authority
Through an exploration of the intellectual history and contemporary writings of the Pagan movement, this study will examine the lineage of ‘knowledge-based’ authority in contemporary Paganism. In particular, it will illuminate how the intellectual lineage of Pagan writings helped contemporary writers respond to a moment of crisis in Paganism, and it will provide an explanation for the traditionalised use of the rhetorical modes of scholarly autho…

The Reluctant Folklorist: Jon Y. Lee, Paul Radin, and the Fieldwork Process
In the early 1930s, the anthropologist Paul Radin hired Jon Lee to collect Chinese American folk narratives in Oakland's Chinatown. These were later published as The Golden Mountain: Chinese Tales Told in California. Despite being lead fieldworker for the project, Lee's contributions have been largely overlooked. This paper examines Lee's important folkloristic work and opens up a wider discussion about the role that professional aspirations play…
