  • Interrogating the Rhodes Must Fall Student Protests Through Fanonian Sociogeny

    Open Access•Veeran Naicker•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2026

This article employs Frantz Fanon's sociogenic method to analyze the MustFall# student protest movement as an illustration of the psychic afterlife of colonialism in postapartheid South Africa. Fanon's sociogeny, which locates the formation of subjectivity in the reciprocal interplay between the psychic and the political, offers a framework for understanding how the failures of the democratic transition—moral, subjective, political, and symbolic—…

  • The problem of epistemological critique in contemporary Decolonial theory

    Veeran Naicker•ARTICLE•Social Dynamics•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 34

Decolonial theory argues that the coloniality of rational Western epistemology is the cause of all global crises, including violent patriarchy, racism and ecological destruction. Contemporary decolonial scholars consequently advocate de-linking from the colonial matrix of power which defines the modern world system. They promote a move towards an epistemologically pluriversal world, which they consider to be theoretically superior and a political…

  • Ressentimentin the Postcolony

    Veeran Naicker•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2019•References: 21

In this paper I track the deployment of Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of ressentiment by three major thinkers in postcolonial theory, namely Frantz Fanon, Edward Said and Achille Mbembe. My argument is that while postcolonial theory has used ressentiment in a captivating way, which may have the potential for accounting for how contemporary moral culture conditions racism, nativism and xenophobia, the deployment remains incoherent. The postcolonia…

  • Responding to misrecognition from a (post)/colonial university

Kathy Luckett, Veeran Naicker•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Education•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This article addresses the challenge of reclaiming higher education (HE) as a public good for building effective democracies. We use Bernstein’s model of pedagogic rights and Fraser’s model of social justice to develop a normative framework for discussing how universities in unequal societies might mitigate social injustice. Referring to recent student protests in South Africa, we show the extent of student anger and frustration at the misrecogni…
