Disappointing Great Expectations
Unrequited love is the largest of the many disappointments in Great Expectations . The revised ending may or may not relieve readers of the burden of imagining a permanently thwarted Pip; the centrality of unrequited love is more than thematic, and goes far beyond the protagonist’s desperate love and its fate at the novel’s end. As the most salutary effect of unrequited love may be its securing of perception from an omnipotence that would reduce …
Fassbinder’s Unrequited Love: In a Year with 13 Moons
In 1978 Fassbinder ended his relationship with Armin Meier, who then committed suicide. Fassbinder’s response was In a Year with 13 Moons, whose central character Elvira is repeatedly rejected, unloved, or simply de trop. An extraordinary response to Meier’s death, its ambivalent tribute is an intimate imagining of the experience of rejection. If there is remorse, it is not to be found in any leavening of the unlovable Elvira’s repellent qualitie…

The consummation of the swallow's wings: A Zoo Story
For Robinson Devor's 2000 film Zoo, zoophilia is "digital desire" in ways that go far beyond its thematic fascination with the Internet and with forms of the virtual. Its lavishly excessive visual beauty and its reticence about depicting bestiality make zoophilia a mode of cinematic viewing. Unexpectedly, the film's exploration of zoophilia illuminates an embodied experience of reading that poets and novelists likewise figure in relation to anima…

JFK, Karl Marx, the Pope, Aristotle Onassis, Queen Elizabeth II, Howard Hughes, Fox Mulder, Bill Clinton -- all have been linked to vastly complicated global (or even galactic) intrigues. In this enlightening tour of theories, Mark Fenster guides readers through this shadowy world and analyzes its complex role in American culture and politics.Fenster argues that theories are a form of popular political interpretation and contends that understandi…
Autobiography and David Copperfield 'S Temporalities of Loss
G LOSSING FREUD'S FAMOUS EXAMPLE of “shine on the nose/glance at the nose” ( Glanz auf der Nase ), Christopher Pye suggests that the familiar account of the fetish (as a simulacrum standing in for a missing object) does not capture what is exemplary about the example, that is, the way the act of looking is crystallized in the object seen, a shine equated with a glance. In that conflation, one can recognize the ultimate grounds for the fetish's ca…
