  • The educational incorporation of Daca recipients in multilayered immigration policy contexts

    Cristina Lacomba•ARTICLE•New Community•2022•References: 50

This analysis examines how multilayered policy contexts of reception shape the educational experiences in higher education of the recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA recipients fell into liminal legality between the documented and undocumented categories that exposed them to state-level interpretations of the program. Though recent scholarship debates the effects of immigration laws and policies within th…

  • Bridging city environments: A contextual approach to the mobilisation of immigrant groups

    Open Access•Cristina Lacomba•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 34

Although cities are thought of as environments conducive to collective mobilisation, we know less about the collective processes by which marginal social groups take advantage of these environments to advance their claims. This article uses the concept of bridging social capital to explain the process by which immigrants living in cities with high diversity mobilise. It introduces the concept of bridging environments to show how city context shap…

  • The role of language and the presence of previous immigration cohorts in immigrant political engagement: Ecuadorian collective action in New York City and Madrid

    Cristina Lacomba•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 45

Scholarship on immigration has recently begun to examine the social process by which immigrants make collective demands. By focussing on the case of Ecuadorian immigrants in New York City and Madrid, this comparative analysis shows that in addition to differences in the political opportunity structures in these cities, there are at least two additional contextual differences shaping the ways in which participants in this study mobilize. Mobilizat…

  • Gender and Politics in Comparative Perspective: The Case of Ecuadorean Immigrants in Madrid and New York City

    Cristina Lacomba•ARTICLE•Social Politics International…•2016•References: 11

Building on scholarship on migration and gender in the United States, this article revisits previous findings on the intersection of gender, migration, and political engagement and extends the analysis to a city in a European context, Madrid. By comparing the political practices of first generation Ecuadorian men and women in New York City and Madrid, I demonstrate that contextual differences in these cities, such as immigration law and linguisti…

  • Mobilising abroad across ethnic lines: Home-country politics and immigrant political engagement in comparative perspective

    Open Access•Cristina Lacomba•ARTICLE•Ethnicities•2016•Cited by: 9•References: 58

Scholarship on immigrant political participation has recently examined how immigrants engage in collective action in the receiving society, whereas scholarship focussing on immigrant home-country politics has focused on debating immigrant political engagement vis-à-vis the origin society. What the literature has neglected is how immigrants engage simultaneously in immigrant and home–country politics. This article fills this lacuna through multi-s…
