  • The role of religiousness and beliefs about sexuality in well-being among sexual minority mormons

G Tyler Lefevor, Isabelle P Blaber et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Religion and…•2020

Sexual minorities raised in conservative religions often experience conflict between their sexual and religious identities that affects their well-being. Minority stress theory (Meyer, 2003) and cognitive dissonance theory (Festinger, 1957) offer different explanations for when, why, and how this conflict may affect well-being. Using an intersectional lens (Crenshaw, 1989), we examined how religiousness and beliefs about sexuality relate to well-…

  • Identity Affirmation and Mental Health among Sexual Minorities

James G Bridges, G Tyler Lefevor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of GLBT Family Studies•2020

How can someone successfully integrate a lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) identity and a Mormon identity? Using a sample of 530 LGB-identified individuals raised in the Later-Day Saints (LDS) church, this study asks how factors of empowerment are associated with sexual identity affirmation and mental health outcomes. We found that sexual identity support, connection needs support, LGBT community support, and educational attainment were significant…

    G Tyler Lefevor, Sydney A Sorrell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2020•Cited by: 14•References: 58

In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS church), beliefs about same-sex sexual attraction are carefully differentiated from beliefs about same-sex sexual behavior and identity, leading some to reject a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer (LGBQ) identity label in favor of declining a sexual identity or describing themselves as experiencing same-sex attraction (SSA). Using data from 1,128 sexual minority Mormons recruited from both pol…

  • An Unfortunate Comparison of Apples to Oranges

    Open Access•Christopher H Rosik•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•2017

In reporting the findings of her outcome study of Along-side's intensive outpatient psychotherapy (IOP) program for Christian missionaries and clergy, Jensma (2016) offered an unfortunate “apples-to-oranges” comparison to my outcome data on Link Care's IOP, which resulted in a largely erroneous discussion section. In this comment, I briefly describe the nature of the problematic comparison and provide some additional analyses of my earlier outcom…

  • Toward Normative MMPI-2 Profiles for Evangelical Missionaries in Candidate and Clinical Settings

Open Access•Christopher H Rosik, Meg M Slivoskey et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•2016

In order to replicate and expand the work of Dimos (2013), we compiled the largest samples to date of MMPI-2 standard scale profiles among evangelical Christian missionary candidates (n =1227; 530 men and 696 women) and outpatients (n = 1431; 643 men and 788 women). Results indicated our candidate scale scores were remarkably similar to those reported by Dimos and together these datasets appear to converge on a reliable normative profile for this…

  • Same-Sex Marriage and the Boundaries of Diversity

    Christopher H Rosik•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2014•References: 77

The expanding legalization of same-sex marriage in the Western World may pose significant challenges for the relationship between many religious and socially conservative marriage and family therapists and their professional associations. In the present analysis, I look to the field of moral psychology, particularly Haidt's Moral Foundations Theory, to provide greater clarity regarding the nature of this tension and a resultant tightening of the …

  • Moral Intuitions and Attitudes toward Gay Men

Open Access•Christopher H Rosik, Laura J Dinges et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•2013

In the present study, we surveyed university students (n = 183) to determine if the inclusion of moral intuitions as described in Moral Foundations Theory (MFT) would aid in the explanation of two types of homonegativity toward gay men. After accounting for demographic variables, social desirability, and intrinsic religiousness, results of hierarchical multiple regression procedures indicated that the inclusion of moral intuitions improved predic…

  • Can Specific MMPI-2 Scales Predict Treatment Response among Missionaries

    Open Access•Christopher H Rosik, Natalia I Borisov•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•2010

While the MMPI-2 is unsurpassed in its ability to identify psychopathology and aid in diagnosis and treatment planning, its value in predicting treatment response is less established. We administered the Outcome Questionnaire-45 (Lambert et al., 2004) to a final sample of 112 Christian missionaries on three occasions: pre-treatment, post-treatment, and three month follow up. The sample also completed the MMPI-2 at the pre-treatment assessment. Mu…

Christopher H Rosik, April Summerford et al.•ARTICLE•Mental Health Religion & Culture•2009

In the limited number of studies published to date, intensive outpatient programmes (IOPs) have demonstrated treatment effectiveness and financial benefits over higher continuum of care interventions. In this study, we sought to extend this research using a sample of full-time Christian workers (missionaries and clergy) admitted to an IOP specifically designed for religious professionals. We employed the Outcome Questionnaire – 45 (Lambert et al.…

  • Ideological Concerns in the Operationalization of Homophobia, Part II

    Open Access•Christopher H Rosik•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•2007

Building on the first article in this series (Rosik, 2007), the present study provided empirical analyses to determine the degree to which the relationship between conservative religion and homophobia as defined by Herek's (1998) Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale (ATLG-R) was dependent upon items experienced as antireligious by Christian students. Three multiple regression analyses revealed that the associations between homonegative att…

  • The 16PF and Marital Satisfaction Inventory as Predictors of Missionary Job Success

    Open Access•Amy E Cousineau, M E L Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•2007

The present study evaluated the 16PF and Marital Satisfaction Inventory (MSI) in terms of their ability to predict missionary success, as measured by supervisor evaluations and attrition data. A sample of 158 missionary candidates from a large, evangelical mission agency completed the 16PF and the MSI as part of the application process to become career missionaries. The supervisor's recommendations for return to the team were positively correlate…

  • Ideological Concerns in the Operationalization of Homophobia, Part I

    Open Access•Christopher H Rosik•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•2007

Utilizing Watson's Ideological Surround Model (Watson, et al., 2003) as a backdrop, the present study examined the structural properties of Herek's (1998) Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale (ATLG-R) for a sample of 155 conservative Christian students. Ideological perceptions of the ATLG-R items were derived from a smaller (N = 36) sample of students similar in demographic make up and religious devotion. Factor analytic and ideological su…

  • Homophobia and conservative religion

Christopher H Rosik, Lois K Griffith et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2007

The failure of homophobia scales to consider the normative assumptions of religious communities may result in findings that are less useful in addressing this problem. In this study, 155 undergraduate students at a Christian university were surveyed, separately assessing attitudes toward celibate versus sexually active homosexual men and women. Results of multiple regression analyses found that participants who emphasized a person-behavior distin…

This article will examine these concerns with particular reference to member care professionals. Issues such as confidentiality, compete…

  • Dissociative Disorders in Adult Missionary Kids

    Open Access•Christopher H Rosik, Karen L Kilbourne-Young•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•1999

Growing up in a cross-cultural missions context exposes children to some unique psychological stressors. The present article explores the manner through which these stressors may increase vulnerability to the development of a dissociative adjustment in missionary kids (MKs) exposed to significant trauma. Five cases of dissociative disorder among adult MKs were investigated for the reported prevalence of abusive and unique missions-related stress.…

    Open Access•Christopher H Rosik•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•1997

Prompted by the author's own encounter with six patients who had previously undergone exorcism or deliverance prayer, this article critically examines the modern criteria for possession and demonization found in the evangelical Christian literature and reviews contemporary empirical research on exorcism. Some suggestions for future research are also presented. The increasing awareness of dissociation and the preliminary findings of negative seque…

  • Conversations with an Internal Self Helper

    Open Access•Christopher H Rosik•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•1992

Internal self helpers (ISHs) have been clinically observed in many persons with multiple personality disorder (MPD). This article reviews and expands on the ISH literature, utilizing the author's prolonged dialogue with one such ISH. Focus is given to the ISH's self-reported nature and function, the dynamics of working with an ISH in therapy, and some initial guidelines for relating this and other apparent paranormal phenomena to the Christian wo…

    Open Access•Christopher H Rosik•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychology and Theology•1995

The complexities of multiple personality disorder (MPD) continue to create significant opportunities for misdiagnosis by Christian counselors. The present study first examines some potential contributing factors for misdiagnosis, with special focus on the risk of overdiagnosis among Christian clinicians. An extensive literature review is then offered which highlights features differentiating MPD from several other diagnostic groups. Assessment in…
