Neighborhood Variation in Childhood Asthma Emergency Department Visit Rates in Austin, Texas, Is Associated with Tenant-Reported Housing Conditions
Housing conditions are a significant contributor to the individual-level childhood asthma burden. However, there is limited evidence that housing exposures are associated with population-level asthma outcomes and disparities. In this study, we examined the association between neighborhood rates of tenant-reported poor housing conditions and childhood asthma emergency department (ED) visits in Austin, Texas. Incidence rates (IR) of poor housing co…
Health disparities and industrial emissions
Racialized and lower-income communities often face disproportionate health risks from air pollution. In central Texas, semiconductor fabrication plants (SFPs) are a major emissions source, but their health effects and impact on disparities remain unclear. This study examined 217 census tracts in Travis County, Texas, calculating an SFP exposure score based on facility-reported emissions, weighted by proximity. Using distance-adjusted propensity s…
Domains of Housing Instability and Intimate Partner Violence Risk Among U.S. Tenants
While IPV is often studied as a predictor of housing insecurity, few U.S. studies explore how different forms of housing instability may contribute to intimate partner violence (IPV) risk. Using a mixed-methods approach and a cross-sectional design, this study examined the association between four housing instability domains and IPV among a sample of tenants that had either experienced eviction or were at high risk for eviction. Tenants in Harris…
The Housing and Planning Act of 2024
It is time for a new commitment to housing in America. Federal action is needed to address the severe lack of housing affordable to the lowest-income renters, entrenched patterns of income and raci
Alignment of Air Pollution Exposure Inequality Metrics with Environmental Justice and Equity Goals in the United States
A growing literature within the field of air pollution exposure assessment addresses the issue of environmental justice. Leveraging the increasing availability of exposure datasets with broad spatial coverage and high spatial resolution, a number of works have assessed inequalities in exposure across racial/ethnic and other socioeconomic groupings. However, environmental justice research presents the additional need to evaluate exposure inequity-…

Yimbyism, the Environment, and the Remaking of Race and Class Coalitions In austin, Tx
Recently, debates about the future of Austin's housing policies have been reshaped by the rise of a vocal group of well-organized and self-styled YIMBYs. In particular, this group has been important in the restructuring of political coalitions that both support and oppose the Urbanist elements contained in the ongoing land-development code (LDC) reform effort, especially the realignment of mainstream environmentalists. One significant stake in th…
Looking for Home after Katrina
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, more than a million Gulf Coast residents were forced to flee, nearly 250,000 to Texas. New Orleans lost more than half its population. Four years later, many low-income residents had yet to return. Through qualitative research with low-income survivors relocated to Austin, Texas, and the caseworkers and service providers who worked with them, this article describes the experiences of low-income households. D…
Old apartments and new plans
Increasingly, cities in rapidly growing regions are promoting redevelopment to achieve denser, mixed use patterns thought crucial to environmental sustainability. Redevelopment often threatens older apartments, built in the 1970s and early 1980s during a building boom fostered by federal tax incentives. While often these aging apartments are a poor fit for the family households who inhabit them, they have become the largest stock of rental housin…
Immigration and native-born male earnings
With micro data from the US Census for 1980 and 1990, we document the growth of recent immigrants across New York metropolitan area job structure and test for the effects of recent immigrants on mean job earnings for native-born white, black and Hispanic male workers. During the 1980s foreign-born workers increased from 31 to almost 50 per cent of all workers in 'secondary' jobs, the lowest paying jobs that employ about one-third of the region's …
