Generally speaking, Queer Studies in Media & Popular Culture ( QSMPC ) reserves issues with an evident theme to those crafted by guest editors. Recent examples include our issues on post-human drag, material culture and transnational queerness. Occasionally, though, themes emerge in our issues, serendipitously and quite by accident. Take the current issue of QSMPC , for example. I would love to be able to tell you that we intended it to focus on …
Ma Vie en (Etats) Rouges (‘My life in red [states]’)
The cancellation of a student-sponsored drag show by the president of a public university in Texas was one of a number of recent moves by officials in so-called ‘red states’ in the United States targeting sexual and gender diversity and reproductive rights. Those actions are part of broader assaults on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts at state-supported institutions that may be seen as attempts at reinforcing traditional social power struc…
Where radio dare not tread
Even given its focus on narrowly defined audiences, contemporary radio in the United States is commercial, and thus dependent upon a consumer goods sector that is market-driven, risk-averse and fearful of recrimination by those opposed to homosexuality or non-binary genders and government regulators. The film ratings system employed by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has been criticized by LGBTQ critics who claim the system discriminates by holding queer content to a higher ratings standard than content in other films. The MPAA argues the constituency for its ratings system is parents in traditional families who may find queer themes inappropriate for their children. Paradoxically, a number of organizations serving adolescent…

The Evolution Will Not Be Broadcast (or Published)
Widespread technological advances, coupled with social and political success by the LGBTQ rights movement in the decades following the Stonewall uprising in 1969, have resulted in a dramatic evolution in the queer community. But increases in visibility, acceptance, and assimilation of queers into mainstream culture and cultural institutions have been accompanied by mainstream gentrification of formerly queer neighborhoods, more specialized social…

HIV/Aids and Culture 30 Years On
Back in the 1980s, when the HIV/AIDS global pandemic was in its early and, in some ways, most visible stages, metaphors began to emerge as particularly compelling elements of the sense-making that
HIV/Aids, Social Capital, and Online Social Networks
The prospects for online social networks as sites of information-gathering and affiliation for persons with AIDS and others concerned about HIV/AIDS not only represent the latest development in a trend toward circumventing traditional media and official information sources, but also may offer hope for a revitalization of HIV/AIDS discourse in the public sphere. This article provides an overview of three decades of information-seeking on the pande…
