Breastfeeding and cognitive development in the first 2 years of life
The Kent Infant Development Scale
A modified administration of the Kent Infant Development Scale for infants 6 to 8 mo. old was used in a prospective study of risk factors in infant development. The Mental Development Index and Psychomotor Development Index of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development were also administered at 6 mo., the Mental Index only at 1 and 2 yr. and the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale at age 3. The modified administration is described. Concurrent validity…
Size and Cognitive Development in the Early Preschool Years
The interrelationships of measures of weight, length, and head circumference from birth through age three years with measures of cognitive development from six months through three years are generally positive in direction. The consistency of the relationship remained apparent after control of potentially relevant confounding variables
The McCarthy Scales
The McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA) was admin istered to 80 urban black children when they were preschoolers. Five years later, 68 of these children were retested with this scale. Scores on these two administrations were interrelated and were also corre lated with reading test scores, IQ scores of parents, and amount of parental education. The summary MSCA score, called the General Cognitive Index, proved valid in the five-year pre…
Cumulative Deficit,” a Longitudinal Analysis of Scores on McCarthy Scales
Preschool testing of 80 black disadvantaged children with the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities was followed 5 yr. later with reexamination with the same Scales. The attrition rate was only 15%. Published norms were used for 27 children (primary group). Extrapolated norms were used for a supplementary group of 41 older children for whom published norms were not appropriate. A performance drop in the General Cognitive Index, predicted from r…
Children's Free Recall and Clustering Related to List-Task Organization, Instruction to Learn and Presentation Rate
Free recall of 144 fifth grade children given a handwriting orienting task was improved by instruction to learn as opposed to incidental instruction and by slower presentation rate. Active taxonomic categorization surpassed passive writing of the same clustering list, which, in turn, surpassed writing of a nonclusterable list. Interactions were not significant although increased time tended to facilitate intentional more than incidental learning.…
Changes in Authoritarian Family Ideology with Childrearing Experience
In previous cross-sectional research postpartum white women who have just delivered a first child (primiparous women) have scored higher on a scale entitled Authoritarian Family Ideology than women whose delivery was of later children. This delivery order, or parity, effect was attributed to the difference in childrearing experience of the different parity levels. A rival hypothesis is that authoritarianism might be related to desired family size…
Maternal Quick Test (QT) Scores in Child Development Research
The Quick Test, a brief measure requiring recognition of vocabulary, was given to 503 mothers of mother-child pairs in a research program. Its correlations with demographic variables, IQ of child, and an index of authoritarian attitude demonstrate its validity in such research
