  • Marchand, Trevor H. J. — The Masons of Djenne

    Open Access•Andreas Massing•ARTICLE•Cahiers d études africaines•2012

The aim to understand the building of mansions and mosques in Djenne and how builders learn and transmit their craft to others made the author join a building team in order to acquire basic skills through participant observation-brick-making, foundation casting, building of walls, roofing, decoration and plastering. Scenes from daily life of masons or apprentices are skilfully blended in with the construction stages. When Djenne became Unesco Wor…

  • Imams of Gonja: The Kamaghate and the Transmission of Islam to the Volta Basin

    Open Access•Andreas Massing, Andreas Walter Massing•ARTICLE•Cahiers d études africaines•2012•References: 16

The Kamaghate lineage which claims to belong to the Diakhanke tradition of Haji Salim Souaré and the Soninke clerical lineage of Diaby-Gassama has held the imamate in Begho and expanded with the Gonja into the Western Volta basin. Its roots can be followed to centres of Islamic diaspora such as Djenne, Odienne, Samatiguila, Tiemé, Kong, Bouna and Bondoukou. It forms part of an Eastern Diakhanke branch which has introduced Islam into the Volta Bas…

The Netherlands have had the longest contacts with Ghana among the six nations with est…

  • Bradbury, Mark. – Becoming Somaliland

    Open Access•Andreas Massing•ARTICLE•Cahiers d études africaines•2011

The Horn of Africa is one of the least known regions of the globe and receives media attention over fighting in or near Mogadisho, piracy or terrorism. The image of Somalia as failed state does not fit the reality that there are areas which carry on their lives–like African communities have done for thousands of years–under traditional local authority without state institutions. In Northern Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland have since 1990, emerge…

  • Valentim Fernandes' Five Maps and the Early History and Geography of São Tomé

    Open Access•Andreas Massing•ARTICLE•History in Africa•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Maps may be important historical documents, reflecting the situation of a given place at a given time, and comparing several maps from different periods of the same area can inform us of changes in social and human geography. For some distant parts of the world they may be the only sources for a past that provides us with few if any sources. Thus Valentim Fernandes' five maps of São Tomé are a unique source for the slow and gradual growth of the …

  • Mapping the Malagueta Coast: A History of the Lower Guinea Coast, 1460–1510 through Portuguese Maps and Accounts

    Open Access•Andreas Massing•ARTICLE•History in Africa•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 2

The Malagueta Coast can serve as a classic example of a region which was integrated into the world economy as a result of world demand for its resources—spices and labor in the fifteenth/sixteenth centuries, and again in the nineteenth century palm oil, cocos fiber, and labor—and has sunk into oblivion once the demand ceased. It is similar with Liberia's rubber and iron ore industry of the twentieth century. I had wanted to write this paper, whic…

  • Baghayogho: A Soninke Muslim Diaspora in the Mande World

    Open Access•Andreas W Massing, Andreas Massing•ARTICLE•Cahiers d études africaines•2004•Cited by: 4•References: 10

  • Valsecchi, Pierluigi & Viti, Fabio (dir.). – Mondes Akan/Akan Worlds. Identité et pouvoir en Afrique occidentale/Identity and Power in West Africa. Paris-Montréal, L’Harmattan, 1999, 361 p., bibl.

    Open Access•Andreas Massing•ARTICLE•Cahiers d études africaines•2002

The contributions to Akan Worlds center around the rise to power and its manifestations at various levels, from micro-level (local spirit cult, village, lineage) to macro-level (chiefdom or state). While the contributions deal with specific polities such as Nzima (2), Efutu (2), Bono (1), Baoule (2) and Ashanti (2), few deal with “integration by conquest” which was the dominant model of Akan expansion in the past. Chouin argues that cross-ethnic …

  • The Wangara, an Old Soninke Diaspora in West Africa

    Open Access•Andreas W Massing, Andreas Massing•ARTICLE•Cahiers d études africaines•2000•Cited by: 6•References: 19

The Wangara are a central element of a Soninke diaspora and go back for centuries in history, namely to the Soninke kingdom of Ghana. They were known as Wakoré, who probably obtained royal trade privileges. Certain groups holding the imamates in key settlements such as the Sa(gha)nogo, Kamaghaté, Diaba(gha)té, Timité, Cissé-Haidara, Fofana and Bagayogo are of Soninke origin, but other people identify themselves with them claiming “Wangara” status…

  • The Mane, the Decline of Mali, and Mandinka Expansion towards the South Windward Coast

    Open Access•Andreas W Massing, Andreas Massing•ARTICLE•Cahiers d études africaines•1985•Cited by: 3
