Students’ teamwork behaviour in multidisciplinary student teams
The great challenges of the modern age, such as climate change or global inequality, are complex problems that transcend disciplinary boundaries. Multidisciplinary teamwork is needed to bring together disciplinary insights and to create a more comprehensive understanding of these problems. Higher education should prepare students for working in multidisciplinary teams, but relatively little is known about how students interact in multidisciplinar…
The Researcher's Facilitating Role in Stimulating a Constructive Group Climate in Online Focus-Group Interviews
The purpose of this article is to examine the role of the researcher in stimulating a constructive group climate in online focus-group interviews. It is argued that a climate of psychological safety enhances the likelihood of people expressing their true opinions and thoughts regarding the topic at hand, which is a crucial quality of focus-group research. However, these aspects are more difficult to develop in online encounters than face-to-face.…
Students’ structured conceptualizations of teamwork in multidisciplinary student teams using concept maps
The design of effective teamwork teaching and learning for multidisciplinary student teams is subject to debate both in research as well as in practice. As researchers and educators, we need to understand the context in which students learn by understanding their experiences and their own conceptualizations of teamwork in multidisciplinary student teams, because that is the frame of reference in which they operate. Using a concept mapping method …

Minority dissent, social acceptance and conflict transformation in multiparty systems
Purpose This study aims to investigate the role of minority dissent (MD) as an antecedent for task (TC) and relationship conflict (RC) in groups engaged in multiparty collaboration. The authors hypothesized that MD triggers both TC and RC and that the association between MD and RC is mediated by TC. Moreover, the authors hypothesized that the positive association between MD and RC is attenuated by social acceptance, while the positive association…
Minority Dissent, Openness to Change and Group Creativity
We report the results of a quasi-experimental study that tests the interaction between minority dissent and organizational openness to change on group creativity. In a sample of 199 professionals, organized in 57 groups we have manipulated minority dissent (groups with or without a devil’s advocate) and openness to change (groups were informed that the company they work for IS versus it IS NOT open to change) and evaluated group creativity using …

Decision Styles and Rationality
This study investigates the relationship between the five decision-making styles evaluated by the General Decision-Making Style Inventory, indecisiveness, and rationality in decision making. Using a sample of 102 middle-level managers, the results show that the rational style positively predicts rationality in decision making and negatively predicts indecisiveness, whereas the avoidant style positively predicts indecisiveness
Whatever happened to the ‘European’ in European social psychology? A study of the ambitions in founding the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology
This article studies the ambitions involved in founding the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology (EAESP) in the context of a differentiation between social psychology practised in Europe on the one hand and the United States on the other. To this end 8 key actors have been interviewed: 4 members of the very first Executive Committee (or Planning Committee as it was called then) as well as 4 key players of a second generation. Al…

The difference between ‘True Christian Enlightenment and Obscurantism’ Antipapism in the Netherlands between 1795 and 1830
In 1795, religious freedom was proclaimed in the Netherlands, starting an emancipation process among Dutch Catholics. Nevertheless, antipapist expressions continued to be widespread in the Dutch public. Catholicism was seen as a superstition, unenlightened and unreasonable and this stereotype applied to both, Catholics at home, in the Netherlands, as well as to countries with predominantly Catholic populations. The intensity of antipapism was rel…

Retaliation to personalistic attack
Jones and Davis's [1965. Advances in experimental social psychology. Academic Press] notion of “personalism” was experimentally tested in a situation in which behavior had negative hedonic relevance for the recipient. It was hypothesized that (1) if a person is attacked by another person, this victim will react more negatively than when no attack occurs and that (2) a victim who is singled out for attack will react more negatively compared with v…
Explanations and Evaluations by Turks and Dutchmen of Norm Violating Ingroup and Outgroup Behaviour
Group-serving biases in the explanation and evaluation of norm violating ingroup and outgroup behaviour are investigated. The intergroup relationship concerns autochthonous Dutchmen and allochthonous Turks living in The Netherlands. It was hypothesized that Dutch observers exhibit group-serving biases. No hypothesis was formulated for the Turks. A 2×2 design was employed with actor's group membership (ingroup or outgroup), and observer's group me…
