Breaking the Silence
While case studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Therapeutic Assessment (TA) with clients with unresolved trauma, the precise mechanisms of change remain untested. This study investigates predictions about how TA helps clients resolve trauma. The first part of the article details the TA for Mei, a woman with severe PTSD, C-PTSD and shame. The second part of the article includes a single-case time-series design experiment using Mei's dail…
Ultra-Brief Therapeutic Assessment with Three Chinese Adult Clients
Therapeutic Assessment (TA) is a relatively new, short-term intervention that uses psychological tests to address clients' persistent problems in living. The core feature of TA is that assessors and clients work collaboratively in all the phases of the process, and psychological tests are used as "empathy magnifiers" to help assessors understand clients' "dilemmas of change" and promote positive change. An "ultra-brief" TA protocol involving an I…

In Our Clients’ Shoes
How Therapeutic Assessment became humanistic
Therapeutic Assessment is a semi‐structured form of collaborative psychological assessment that grew out of efforts to make psychological assessment a positive and beneficial experience for clients. Although we developed this approach without being highly informed about humanistic psychology, gradually our work with clients led us toward more humanistic techniques and principles. We describe some of these techniques and their relationship to the …

February 2002 • American Psychologist able to improve on the validity of their assessment conclusions (Garb, 1998; Grove, Zald, Lebow, Snitz, & Nelson, 2000). Because Meyer et al. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from…

Stability of personality self-ratings over 30 years
An investigation was made of the hypothesis of Bloom (1964) and others that the stability of personality is greater among older than younger adults. The subjects were 459 men in two cohorts, followed from 1947 to 1977 as part of a longitudinal medical study. Self-ratings were obtained over the 30-year period on 15 item-factor scales from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and on two higher order factors. There was no selective attrit…
Factors Influencing Women's Participation in Consciousness-Raising Groups
The results of a nationwide survey point out both commonality and diversity in the experiences of women in consciousness-raising (CR) groups. Women commonly joined CR groups through women's organizations, and their most important reason for entering CR was to examine women's roles and experiences. Most groups encouraged self-disclosure and openness and discouraged domineering and lack of commitment. The backgrounds and personal characteristics of…
Gender Roles in the Relationships of Lesbians and Gay Men
Recent research on gay male and lesbian couples suggests that traditional gender-role-playing sometimes occurs in their relationships, though it is less common than in the relationships of heterosexuals. This paper briefly explores three issues raised by these findings. First, we consider reasons why partners of the same gender might engage in gender-role-playing. Second we discuss the processes that might be involved in allocating masculine and …
Sex-Role Identity, Sex-Role Behavior, and Satisfaction in Heterosexual, Lesbian, and Gay Male Couples
Partners in 10 heterosexual, 10 lesbian, and 5 gay male couples completed the BSRI and a questionnaire about their demographic backgrounds, sex-role differentiation in their relationships, and satisfaction with the relationship. Members of heterosexual couples were more sex-typed on the BSRI and more sex-role differentiated in their behavior than members of lesbian couples. Members of gay male couples appeared the most sex-typed in their identiti…
