Adaptability versus resistance
This article delves into emergency remote education in higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Building on 82 interviews with students, teachers, and other staff at 10 education programmes in the natural and social sciences and humanities at Uppsala University, Sweden, and drawing on Bourdieu's field concept, we analysed various stances regarding emergency remote education. Our analysis revealed four main strategies: (1) Though emergency r…
Long time in the waiting room
The mobilisation of assets from one national field to another is a topic that has attracted significant sociological attention. In this paper, we investigate migrant physicians who obtained their medical degrees outside the EU/EEA and trace the process of validating their degrees in Sweden. The study is inscribed in Bourdieu’s sociological tradition and is based on a questionnaire and interviews with physicians. Analysing the mobilisation of cult…

Insecurity, lack of support, and frustration
This article investigates the situation of Swedish upper secondary school students who have been subject to distance education during the COVID‐19 pandemic crisis. We understand the transition from onsite education to distance education as a recontextualization of pedagogical practice, our framing follows loosely concepts from Bernstein. Given that the field of upper secondary education is highly socially structured it is relevant to enquire into…
The use of ‘cultural capital’ in sociology of education in Sweden
We seek to consider the use of Pierre Bourdieu’s ‘cultural capital’ within Swedish sociology of education focusing on the adoption of the term and asking how the ‘cultural capital’ is related to the specific context in Sweden. Here we consider the historical context and disciplinary route through which the concept travelled. The Swedish educational system promoted the ideal of meritocracy: everyone had an equal chance to access education, which i…
Dest…
Cultural capital in the elite subfield of Swedish higher education
The idea of a strong tie between culture and education, advocated by Bourdieu and his colleagues from the 1960s, is in this article explored in detail by investigating cultural capital in both its embodied state, expressed in tastes and cultural practices among students in the elite subfield of Swedish higher education, and its institutionalised state, through an analysis of the same students’ enrolment patterns. By applying Specific MCA to a que…
