The New Far Right, Subcultural Theory, and the Sociology of Emotions
This article argues that a theoretical synthesis between subcultural theory and the sociology of emotions can provide a way to grasp the esthetic and emotional appeal of the new far right. This is illustrated through a multimodal analysis of fashwave music. We find that the central emotion conveyed by the music is a variation of restorative nostalgia accompanied by a sense of loss and anger. The analysis demonstrates the potential of the theoreti…

Rap, Islam and Jihadi Cool: The attractions of the Western jihadi subculture
Recent scholarship has explored the potential of subcultural theory for understanding the convergence of Western street and jihadi subcultures. The role of jihadi rap in this radical hybrid culture, however, is yet uncharted. We argue that subcultural analysis allows an understanding of the aesthetic fascination of jihadism, sometimes referred to as jihadi cool, and that jihadi rap should be seen as an integrated part of this cultural amalgam. To…
Reinstating and contextualizing religion in the analysis of Islamist radicalization in the West
Research on Islamist radicalization has been characterized by different analyses of why some people become radical Islamists. Structures such as social, economic and political marginalization are often understood as root causes of radicalization. In critical theorizations of radicalization, religion is often mentioned as a component; however, its role is often downplayed. This article focuses on the debate surrounding explanations of Islamist rad…
Everyday Religion and Radical Islamism – A Contribution to Theorizing the Role of Religion in Radicalization Studies
Empirical data have indicated that radical Islamists often interpret their everyday life as embedded in religion. Nonetheless, the research field has at times tended to downplay the religious dimensions of radicalization processes. This paper aims to reinstate religion in analyses of radicalization by introducing the theoretical approach of everyday religion. By utilizing this approach, the paper argues that when religion, in the minds of radical…
