  • Liberal democratic values among immigrants in Europe

Open Access•Fabian Gülzau, Marc Helbling et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2025•References: 49

Against the backdrop of debates about migrant integration in Western countries, this article examines the extent to which liberal democratic values differ between migrants and non-migrants in Europe and whether potential differences can be explained by socialisation in different political contexts. We measure specific values of liberal democracies using data from the European Social Survey, covering a large number of countries, and from the Germa…

  • Border regions across the globe

    Open Access•Hannes Taubenböck, C Otto et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Geography•2023

The cosmopolitan dream of a borderless world has little to do with reality. Today's borders bear witness to regulatory intervention in the circulation of goods, information, capital and people. These interventions, naturally, have an impact at border regions. For analyzing these impacts, we map, quantify and relate border typologies, development dynamics near borders, and economic and political indicators of neighboring nation-states. We do so on…

  • A “New Normal” for the Schengen Area. When, Where and Why Member States Reintroduce Temporary Border Controls

    Open Access•Fabian Gülzau•ARTICLE•Journal of Borderlands Studies•2021•Cited by: 12•References: 16

This article investigates the reintroduction of temporary border controls in the Schengen Area. The Schengen Borders Code (SBC, Article 25 et seq.) allows signatory states to reinstate temporary border controls in specific circumstances that constitute a serious threat to public policy or internal security either due to foreseeable events (Art. 27), situations that require immediate action (Art. 28) or exceptional circumstances caused by deficien…

  • Die drei Arenen der neuen Ungleichheitskonflikte. Eine sozialstrukturelle Positionsbestimmung der Einstellungen zu Umverteilung, Migration und sexueller Diversität

Open Access•Steffen Mau, Thomas Lux et al.•ARTICLE•Berliner Journal für Soziologie•2020•Cited by: 16•References: 13

  • A paradigm shift in German family policy

    Open Access•Fabian Gülzau•ARTICLE•European Policy Analysis•2019•Cited by: 7•References: 22

This article explores the newspaper discourse surrounding a paradigm shift in social policy. The case at hand, Germany, is a prime example of a welfare state that was particularly resistant to reform. Hence, the rapid paradigm shift in German family policy since the late 1990s is puzzling. This study seeks to resolve this puzzle by drawing on the insight that public discourse is crucial for policy change. Politicians have to promote reforms prior…

  • Regional Mobility Spaces? Visa Waiver Policies and Regional Integration

    Open Access•Fabian Gülzau, Steffen Mau et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration•2016•Cited by: 9•References: 9

Visa policies today are a central instrument for filtering wanted and unwanted types of travellers, leading to a hierarchy of mobility rights. While there is evidence of a “global mobility divide”, we still know little about the role of regional integration when it comes to the distribution of mobility rights and the (re)structuring of mobility spaces. Against this background, the article examines the structure of visa relations in different bodi…

  • Circumventing deadlock through venue-shopping

Natascha Zaun, Christof Roos et al.•ARTICLE•New Community•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 25

This article addresses the question of how the financial and economic crisis that hit the USA in the late 2000s impacted immigration policies. We find that the crisis has not significantly changed dynamics. Instead, it has highlighted and aggravated persisting trends. Drawing on Kingdon’s multiple streams model and combining it with the notion of two-level games, we find that while the policy stream and the problem stream would call for both rest…

  • The Global Mobility Divide

Steffen Mau, Fabian Gülzau et al.•ARTICLE•New Community•2015•Cited by: 51•References: 24

While visa policies are the major instrument for regulating and controlling the global flow of people, little is known about how they have changed over time. Accordingly, scholars have expressed the need for large-N datasets which cover more than one point in time. This article takes up this challenge and presents a for the first time a global overview of the changes in visa waiver policies based on a newly created database containing the visa wa…
