He Offered to Buy Me a Sundress
As social workers, we value social justice and strive to uphold equal rights and opportunities for all. Nevertheless, harassment and discrimination still occur at social work academic conferences, impeding a person's ability to safely and equitably conduct their job. In response to an incident of harassment that occurred at the 2022 Council on Social Work Education Annual Program Meeting, we conducted a rapid response methodological approach util…
The Psychometric Properties of the Competency Assessment Tool for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Clients
This study introduces a new instrument designed to assess affirmative clinical practices with sexual and gender minority (SGM) clients, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Competency Assessment Tool (LGBT-CAT). The LGBT-CAT has two unique qualities: Its design enables adaptation to measure practice competencies with gay, lesbian, bisexual and/or transgender clients, the latter of which has no existing measures regarding practice competenc…
Educational Determinants of Readiness to Practise with LGBTQ Clients
As health and mental health providers are increasingly called to attend to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) issues, it is critical for social work education to ensure the competency of students to deliver services to these populations. This North American online study investigated the self-assessed readiness of LGBTQ undergraduate and master's-level social work students (n = 1,018) to practise with LGBT clients, as well as th…

Faculty activism is an integral part of shared governance in higher education institutions, yet little is known about the dynamics that underlie this activism. History at the Table
This article is a case study of problems that emerged during the planning of an anti‐poverty program in a community in the rural American South in the early 1990s. Issues of racism, sexism, and classism in the planning process are discussed as they are informed by the national welfare reform rhetoric of the time, a local context of historical and current White racism, and the historical and current identity positions of the local Black planners. …
Comprehensive Community Initiatives
This article challenges the notion that the comprehensive community initiative (CCI) is a singularly urban intervention strategy by comparing a rural comprehensive initiative with the literature on urban CCIs. Characteristics of CCIs in urban settings are discussed and compared with Warren Family Institute (WFI), a demonstration project in rural North Carolina. Findings support the thesis that the CCI has been implemented and found effective in r…
Policy and Practice
This article outlines a variety of structural approaches that together work to interrupt heterosexism and homophobia in social work programs. The approaches offered include policy development, recruitment and hiring practices, and the development of innovative student support services. Program evaluation is suggested as a way to assess program performance and target areas for change. While these strategies are targeted at social work programs, th…
Using A Story-Building Approach To Research Comprehensive Community Initiatives
This article is the story of the author's experiences as a researcher-storyteller. She delineates the process used to "build a story" of the planning and development of a rural comprehensive community initiative. In a critically reflective look at this approach to community research, the author describes how she selected the research topic, defined the purposes of the research, selected the methods used in data collection and analysis, and approa…
"Are You Married?" Two Sexual-Minority Students' Perspectives on Field Placements
Are you married?" It is my first day of field placement. I had prepared so carefully by moving the ring my lover gave me to my right hand and leaving my pink triangle earring at home. Dressed in "professional clothes," I knew that I could pass undetected. Now, confronted with this question, how do I respond
