“You’re a Mature Student and You’re a Tiny, Tiny Little Fish in a Big Massive Pond of Students”
Mature students in postsecondary education—those over 25 years of age, also known as nontraditional students or adult learners—make up a significant minority population on Canadian postsecondary campuses. Despite academic performance that tends to be higher than that of traditional students, the retention of mature students is lower due to the stressors they face in their home and school roles. This paper examines the insights of mature students …
Heteroprofessionalism in the Academy
This article engages with Robert Mizzi's theorization of heteroprofessionalism to describe the experiences of two queer professors in the fields of Education and Psychology. We explore how heteronormative and cisnormative expectations of post-secondary professors impact professional practices and increase the regulation and surveillance of queer professors in academia. We methodologically employ Grace and Benson's queer life narratives approach t…
Fat fuckers and fat fucking
Through the regulation of both femininity and fatness, dominant norms in queer communities construct fatness and femininity as excessive, desexualised/hypersexualised, and undeserving of sexual desire, pleasure, and care. Care, as a feminine ethical stance emphasising relationality and interdependency, is not typically associated with fucking, yet is critical in sex therapeutic work and interventions. In this article, we contend that fat scholars…
Use of sexuality-focused entertainment media in sex education
The literature on the impact of entertainment media on sex education is typically pathology-focused, unclear regarding the effects of such usage, and void of dialogue between those who actually work in the areas of sexuality education and entertainment. To address this gap, this paper is the product of joint authorship between media figures from varied sexually-focused programming fields and academics who teach and conduct research in the areas o…
Intimate Partner Violence and Social Relational Theory
Interviews with survivors of intimate partner violence were conducted to gain information on the transition from violent relationships to new non‐violent relationships. A subset of this data was re‐analysed using Social Relational Theory to gain further insight into the roles of children and important others who were identified as impacting this transition for mothers who had exited violent relationships. This paper reviews two major themes disco…
Pleasure-Centered Educational Program
Women in a domestic violence shelter in Georgia were recruited to participate in a series of comprehensive, sex-positive, educational workshops. The purpose of the series was to provide a place for survivors of domestic violence to discuss positive and negative aspects of their previous sexual experiences and to offer a forum in which all aspects of sexuality, including pleasurable sexuality, could be discussed. The focus of the program was to ed…
An Updated Social Context for Therapy with Elder Lesbian Couples
Elder lesbian couples are a population group requiring knowledge that often is not gained through standard marriage and family counseling curriculum, as this is a population that has long been hidden, along with their history and societal views. There is a plethora of new research surrounding this group, although much more needs to be learned since without even knowing it, many therapists are undoubtedly already treating lesbians in their caseloa…
Kite in Flight
Adolescent girls are subjected to strong sociocultural forces as they shape and discover their sense of identity. We propose the therapeutic concerns of young women may be relieved by increased empowerment achieved through identity development and the strengthening of interpersonal boundaries. Feminist family therapy and Bowen family systems theory are integrated to offer a clinical approach toward greater empowerment through increased differenti…
Common Concerns Faced by Lesbian Elders
It is important that family therapists working with older lesbian couples, or their surviving members, consider the full and complex contexts of these clients. An exploration of the day-to-day challenges and strengths of these couples requires consideration of the roles of age, gender, and sexuality. Regardless of the modality that is applied, an awareness of common concerns for this population is necessary to yield ethical and effective work in …
