The Poet Shen Yueh (441-513): The Reticent Marquis
Chinese Views of Childhood
Chinese in the twentieth century, intent on modernizing their country, condemned their inherited culture in part on the grounds that it was oppressive to the young. The authors of this pioneering volume provide us with the evidence to re-examine those charges. Drawing on sources ranging from art to medical treatises, fiction, and funerary writings, they separate out the many complexities in the Chinese cultural construction of childhood and the w…

Shih-shuo hsin-yu (A New Account of Tales of the World), compiled by Liu I-ch'ing (403-444), is a collection of anecdotes, short conversations, and pithy observations on personalities who lived in China between about 150 and 420 A.D. Ritual Aspects of Hsieh T'iao's Wardenship of Hsüan-ch'eng
A paramount ritual problem confronting the rulers of the Southern Dynasties in the fourth through the sixth centuries, with their capital in Chien-k'ang ~*(modem Nanjing), was maintaining the myth of interactive resonance between the centrality of the Pole Star in heaven, around which all the stars of heaven revolve, and the centrality of the emperor on earth, around whom all the regions of the earth, as it were, revolve in harmonious and loyal d…

The Poet Shen Yüeh (441-513): The Reticent Marquis
Chinese and Indian Perceptions of Each Other between the First and Seventh Centuries
The earliest recorded perceptions of the Indian subcontinent in China are based on reports of traders, diplomats and generals. Though nothing substantive was reported about India's intellectual or cultural achievements, the accounts generally described a pleasant tropical land with exotic birds and animals, that produced colorful artifacts, and whose people were gentle and peace-loving. After the introduction of Buddhism into China during the fir…
The Poet Shen Yueh (441-513): The Reticent Marquis
This book is a literary biography of Shen Yueh, a statesman, historian, poet, and devout lay defender of both Buddhism and Taoism. His active career spanned three successive dynasties (Liu-Sung, Nan-Ch'i, and Liang), whose capitals were located in the lower Yangtze city of Chien-k'ang (modern Nanking). The title Reticient Marquis (Yin-hou) was awarded him posthumously by the Liang Emperor Wu, who, though owing his own rise to power partly to Shen…

The Life of the Buddha and the Buddhist Life: Wang Jung's (468-93) "Songs of Religious Joy" (Fa-le tz'u)
The literary salon of the Southern Ch'i Prince of Ching-ling, Hsiao Tzu-liang (d. 494), in addition to introducing important prosodic innovations associated with the names of Shen Yueh and Hsieh T'iao, also produced some very noteworthy religious poetry. One of the most original of these religious poets, whose life was unhappily cut off at a very early age, was Wang Jung (468-93), who around the year 487 composed a cycle of twelve Songs of Religi…

The Landscape Buddhism of the Fifth-Century Poet Hsieh Ling-yün
Though relatively less known in the West than his contemporary, T'ao Yüan-ming, Hsieh Ling-yüna (385-433) was in his own generation and for some centuries thereafter the most popular poet of the age. Thirty-two of his shorter poems were included in the Wen-hsüan (compiled about 530), while T'ao is represented there by only eight pieces and Yen Yen-chihb, another contemporary whose name is often coupled with Hsieh's, by nineteen.
