  • The complexities of selling fruits and vegetables in remote Navajo Nation retail outlets

Open Access•Emily M Piltch, Emily Piltch et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2020

Objective: Navajo Nation residents experience extreme rates of poverty, food insecurity and diet-related diseases. While many residents travel far to shop at grocery stores, there are small stores closer to home that could provide more healthy options, like fruits and vegetables (F&V). Little is known from the perspective of store owners and managers regarding the barriers and facilitators to offering F&V; the present study contributes to filling…

  • Dietary Supplement Use Pattern of U.S. Adult Population in the 2007–2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)

Eileen Kennedy, Eileen T Kennedy et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•2013

Data from the 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) suggested that nearly half of U.S. adults aged 20 to 69 reported taking at least one dietary supplement in the past month. Logistic regression showed that the following factors were independently associated with a greater likelihood of supplement use: being female, older, white, having higher level of education, non-SNAP participation, and living in a food-secure ho…

Melissa Fuster, Ellen Messer et al.•ARTICLE•Food and Foodways•2013•References: 24

This study presents an assessment of local definitions and perceptions concerning healthy eating through a study in four resource-poor border communities in El Salvador. The study included focus groups, key-informant interviews, and observations of the food environment. Local definitions of healthy eating elicited through focus groups were compared to the national Salvadoran dietary guidelines recommendations. The comparison revealed several area…

    Elizabeth L Brach, Kathleen A Camara et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2000

Dinnertime conflict interactions among parents and children in 82 mother-custody, father-custody, and two-parent homes were compared. Each conflict episode was identified, and coded for speaker, type of fighter move, and recipient of the talk turn in the sequence of their occurrence. The mothers in single-parent homes selectively fought more with their sons than the adults in either comparison group. Children in each family configuration particip…

  • Patterns of Dinnertime Interaction in Divorced and Non-Divorced Families

    Elizabeth L Brach, Kathleen A Camara et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2000

To compare verbal non-conflict interactions among parents and children in both single- and two-parent homes, dinnertime conversation for 82 families was analyzed. It was learned that conversation in the single parent homes was characterized by fewer talk turns and less parental input. The conversation in father custody dinners was more focused on the concrete exchange of dinnertime materials than either of the other households. Girls spoke more t…
