The Life Cycle, Aging, and Death: Dialectical Perspectives
The life cycle and its study are seen as the locus of dialectical intersections through the several perspectives of the contributors to this symposium. Sardello and Datan locate the dialectic of the life cycle at the interface between youth and age: Sardello proposes that the polarities of youth and age are united in the individual’s dialectical consciousness of the life cycle, while Datan argues that the narcissism of the life cycle, binding the…
Corpses, Lepers, and Menstruating Women: Tradition, Transition, and the Sociology of Knowledge
A study of 1148 middle-aged women in five Israeli subcultures ranging from modern Central European immigrants to traditional Moslem Arab villagers is the point of departure for this essay on tradition, transition and the sociology of knowledge. The study is shown as having evolved through the competing hypotheses of the investigators, which in turn reflect the biases born of the experiential framework: two men and one young woman design a study t…
An observational study of affective and assertive family interactions during adolescence
The challenge of double jeopardy: Toward a mental health agenda for aging women
Corpses, lepers, and menstruating women: Tradition, transition, and the sociology of knowledge
Mothers and fathers and mothers and babies: Interrelationship among relationships
The relationship between perceived marital satisfaction and early mother-infant interaction was investigated. Seventeen mothers and their three-day-old infants served as subjects. Dyads were observed via a modified time-sampling technique during a hospital feeding session. Then mothers completed a questionnaire concerning their perceptions of the marital relationship. Correlational analyses revealed a significant covariance of positive perception…
Transitions of Aging
The North American Berdache [and Comments and Reply]
The status of berdache among North American Indians was filled by persons, usually male, who remained members of their biological gender but assumed important social characteristics of the other gender. Concentrated in western and midwestern North America, berdaches were few. The status tended to disappear after Indian societies came under outside political control. Male berdaches, particularly, combined the social roles assigned to both genders.…
Cross-cultural Perspectives on Middle-aged Women [and Comments and Replies]
Several exploratory cross-cultural studies have suggested that positive changes take place in the lives of women in non-Western societies as they age beyond the childbearing years. They are freed from a variety of restrictions. They are given authority over certain specified kinsmen, and they are provided with opportunities for achievement and recognition beyond the household. The fact that such changes are more dramatic in some societies than in…
The Limbo People: A Study of the Constitution of the Time Universe among the Aged. Haim Hazan
Gender and Culture: Kibbutz Woman Revisited. Melford E. SPIRO. Weston La Barre, Foreword
The Psychobiology of Sex Differences and Sex Roles . Jacquelynne E. Parsons
Maternal behavior and perceived sex of infant
Eleven mothers interacted with one six-month-old male infant, dresses either as a male or female. Differences were found in overall maternal stimulation and toy handling as a function of perceived sex of the baby. Mothers interviewed reported that treatment of their own infants was not differentiated by sex. Results indicate that mothers behave according to their expectations rather than infant cues, although unaware of their stereotyping
