Reliability test of the visual assessment of cranial traits for sex determination
Interobserver variation in visual evaluation was analyzed for 10 cranial traits in a homogeneous archaeological series. Two observers independently scored cranial traits commonly used for determination of sex. Rethinking Pelvic Typologies and the Human Birth Mechanism
Paleoanthropological reconstructions of childbirth in the genus Homo typically rely upon a model incorporating the evolution of a monotypic human birth mechanism. Two features characterize this proposed mechanism or pathway taken by the fetus through the birth canal: fetal rotation and neonate emergence in a position facing away from the mother. Sexual dimorphism in the pelvic midplane and its relationship to Neandertal reproductive patterns
The fragmentary nature of the fossil record has limited the analysis of the Neandertal pelvis to the superior pubic ramus and the pelvic inlet. From an obstetric viewpoint, the pelvic midplane or "plane of least dimensions," defined by the distance between the ischial spines, must be considered in the analysis of hominid reproduction.
