Language practices and religious rites in the Full Gospel Mission Cameroon
This paper deals with language practices in one Pentecostal church in Cameroon, i.e. the Full Gospel Mission Cameroon (FGMC). The data are produced by some 80 pastors, church officials, choir leaders and congregants, and the settings are some 20 churches located in two anglophone regions and two francophone regions of Cameroon. Language choice in multilingual socio‐religious settings in southwest Cameroon
This paper examines the factors motivating language choice in church in two semi‐urban, multilingual localities of Anglophone Cameroon, namely, Kumba and Mundemba. The informants were priests, catechists, choir leaders and parishioners; and the data were collected through participant observation and a questionnaire. This paper examines how religious institutions exploit available linguistic resources to perform their rites. The Espérance parish of the Union des Eglises Baptistes au Cameroun [Union of Baptist Churches in Cameroon] offers two church services on Sundays i.e. the Fulfulde service and the French-Duala service. This article examines the use of indigenous languages in Cameroon and the attitudes of their native speakers to these languages. The subjects are a group of highly literate young male and female Cameroonians doing Combined French–English studies at the University of Yaounde I. Camfranglais is a newly created language, a composite slang used by secondary school pupils in Cameroon, West Africa. It draws its lexicon from French, English, West African Pidgin, various Cameroonian indigenous languages, Latin, and Spanish.
