Johann Baptist von Schweitzer
Despite his conviction on a morals charge involving a boy, the early German Social Democrat Johann Baptist von Schweitzer went on to have a successful political career. His life furnishes the context to present remarks by his political opponents Marx and Engels, which reveal their deep-seated homophobia. It is pointed out that this has been glossed over by the translations of the recently published Marx/Engels Collected Works. Some remarks on boy…
Twilight of the Gods
The writings of the Scotch-German John Henry Mackay are important for the early cultural history of the modern gay movement. This article recalls this unjustly neglected anarchist writer and advocate of man/boy love by tracing his biography and pointing out his contacts with others in the movement. His late novella Der Unschuldige is analyzed to show that Mackay has encoded homosexuality there in a unique and individual way
The "Third Sex" Theory of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs
In the 1860s, with an innovative theory of the origin of homosexuality that saw it as neither a sin nor a sickness, the German lawyer Karl Heinrich Ulrichs became an outspoken defender of its practice. This paper describes the theory, placing it historically in the context of Ulrichs' life, and shows why, although progressive for its time, the theory eventually was abandoned
The Case for James Mills Peirce
This paper presents a circumstantial, but convincing, case that James Mills Peirce (1834--1906), professor of mathematics and first dean of the Graduate School of Harvard University, was the author of a strong defense of homosexuality, which was published anonymously in 1897
The Mathematical Philosophy of Giuseppe Peano
Because Bertrand Russell adopted much of the logical symbolism of Peano, because Russell always had a high regard for the great Italian mathematician, and because Russell held the logicist thesis so strongly, many English-speaking mathematicians have been led to classify Peano as a logicist, or at least as a forerunner of the logicist school. An attempt is made here to deny this by showing that Peano's primary interest was in axiomatics, that he …
