The impact of war in Ukraine on EU migration
When the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022, one of the most immediate and dramatic reactions of the European Union (EU) was to open a special protection scheme for Ukrainians and non-Ukrainians who were resident in the country on the date of the invasion to enter the EU and remain with extensive rights (All EU states are part of the scheme with the exception of Denmark which because of particularities in its constitutional po…

The crafting of a paradox: Schengen inside and out
There is now a large literature discussing ‘Fortress Europe’ and the character\nof the Schengen area, especially how it has established freedom of\nmovement inside at the expense of easy access from the outside. This article\nchallenges this metaphor by going back to the early negotiations around\nSchengen and shedding light on some of the concerns raised at the time\nregarding ‘compensatory measures’, the un/desirable and technological\nsolution…

La Nouvelle Politique d’intégration (NPI) aux Pays-Bas depuis 2002
The integration policy in the Netherlands has been transformed fundamentally since 2002. This article analyses the causes and the extent of that transformation. The new policy is no longer based on the supposition that acquiring a secure legal status of immigrants is an important condition for their integration in society but on the idea that it should be the reward for a completed integration. The main elements (language and knowledge test abroa…
Acquisition and Loss of Nationality. Volumes 1 + 2: Policies and trends in 15 European states
Nationality and citizenship have recently become a hotly contested policy field in several European states. Reforms of the acquisition or loss of nationality have been shaped by concerns about the integration of immigrants as well as by attempts to strengthen ties with emigrants. A team of 30 researchers has examined nationality laws and their implementation in the pre-2004 Member States of the European Union.http://www.imiscoe.org/natac/
Western Europe and its Islam
Immigration from North Africa, Asia and elsewhere meant a large influx of Islam into Western Europe. In each country, Muslims organized in various ways and established numerous institutions such as mosques, cemeteries, halâl butchers, schools, broadcasting organizations, and political parties, and slowly but surely the outlines of Muslim communities begun to emerge. The development of those communities is not a matter of Muslims only, but the pro…
Regulating ethnic immigration: The case of theAüssiedler
The migration of ethnic Germans to Germany is one of the major migration movements to Western Europe after 1950. The efforts of successive German governments to regulate and control the immigration of Aüssiedler may well give some insight into the capacities of governments of democratic states to regulate immigration. This article gives a historical overview of the various instruments used by the German government in order to regulate the immigra…
The recognition and institutionalisation of Islam in Belgium, Great Britain and the Netherlands
In this article the authors argue that the historically specific laws and regulations with regard to religious groups in Belgium, Britain and the Netherlands provoke different political reactions to the presence of Muslims. These laws and regulations also affect — to some extent — the ideological representation of Muslims. The reverse process of laws and regulations being changed by politico‐ideological mobilisation also takes place, but the pict…
