Campus Custodians in the Corporate University
This ethnographic study showcases life stories of campus custodians and their interactions with members of other campus subcultures to reveal insights about higher education. This manuscript illuminates the ways the worldwide economic calamities, beginning in 2008, resulted in the implementation of corporate-like ideologies. This study examines the messages that a university transmits to prospective students during a particular ritual-the campus tour. Specifically, the article discusses the ways that members of a university communicate their expectations with respect to becoming contributing members of the academic community. This article presents five personal narratives about a field-worker's experience during an eighteen-month study of a residential college. The narratives focus on five distinct aspects of fieldwork: gaining access, waiting for action, establishing relationships, respondents' perceptions of the field-worker, and writing up fieldwork accounts. These stories illuminate the unanticipated struggles associated with fieldwork
