Health, Healing, and Hope in Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity
In this time of pandemic, I would like to address health, healing, and hope in three major religious traditions: Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. I myself am a Roman Catholic, teaching history of religions at a Jesuit college in the United States, and I lived as a student and researcher in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka for a total of four years, and am fortunate indeed to have many Hindu and Muslim teachers, colleagues, and friends. But I also…

Introducing Catholics & Cultures
In introducing the Catholics & Cultures site and the articles in this special issue, this essay initially locates the overall Catholic & Cultures project within the traditions of ethnography and encyclopedia. Drawing extensively on the work of J. Z. This essay…
Authority, Representation, and Offense
In reflecting on a sharp scholarly exchange at a conference, this article explores issues of authority, representation, and offense in global Catholic and South Asian Studies. Focusing on the act of foot washing by Dalit Catholics, the article examines how scholarly offense is linked to particular claims of representational authority. The article also puts this discussion within the context of contemporary debates about Western portrayals of Indi…
Dalit Catholic Home Shrines in a North Indian Village
This article examines three Catholic home shrines in a Dalit community in North Indian and argues that it is misleading to think that home shrines and other collections of material objects are somehow static conveyors of meaning. “Meaning” can mean many things or nothing at all, depending upon the terms we are using and the scholarly methods we deploy. The crucial aspect of Dalit Catholic home shrines is that they are literally open to interpreta…

When festinger fails
Within its history, the Watch Tower has often set dates for the coming of Christ's millennial reign. The ability of Jehovah's Witnesses to endure the failure of these interpretations of Biblical prophecy reveals the power of the Watch Tower to withstand what would seem to be fatal challenges to its system of belief. In what has become a classic study, the social psychologist Leon Festinger has argued that such disconfirmations of prophecy lead on…
