Discourse, framing and narrative: Three Ways of Doing Critical, Interpretive Policy Analysis
Three decades after the argumentative turn in policy analysis and planning, interpretive approaches have become part of mainstream policy analysis. Increasingly, researchers work within these traditions. Researchers new to these approaches might struggle to make conceptual and methodological choices. We therefore compare three prominent interpretive approaches: discourse analysis, framing analysis and narrative analysis. Discourse analysis is the…
Navigating networks – to make a difference: The support base composition of local change agents in Amsterdam, Birmingham, Glasgow and Copenhagen
As the attention for collaborative governance is on the rise emphasizing bottom-up approaches in urban planning and regeneration, there is an increasing interest in local people able to enact ‘place-based’ leadership and change. While several studies have characterized these individuals, other parts of the scholarly literature show that they seldom work alone but often in collaboration with others. The commodification of mobile workers in Europe - a comparative perspective on capital and labour in Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden
One of the defining features of contemporary Europe is the freedom of movement of persons. Despite its advantages, this 'freedom of movement' is also contested, since it has been shown to cause discrimination, exploitation and pave the way for a 'race to the bottom'. How can we understand the social-economic consequences of free movement in Europe? To answer this question, we developed a typology along the dimensions value of work and degree of p…
Between migration and mobility discourses: The performative potential within ‘intra-European movement’
This article displays how discourses around intra-European movement are constructed to reveal the performativity of discourses. Therefore, it mainly aims to deliver theoretical contributions to the field of discursive policy analysis by empirical case study material. The overall argument is that discursive policy analysis benefits from an analytical framework that deals with a refined operationalization including ‘storyline’ and ‘poetic’ elements…

Numbers and data collection play a key role in political framing. To explore how this works, this article provides a case-study analysis of European mobile workers in the Netherlands. This article examines how numbers contributed to the framing process of this topic. This study reveals …
Get those voices at the table: Interview with Deborah Stone
The Institute was part of a new movement to make government and public administration into a science. Its founders came up with this phrase ''Policy Sciences'' to convey the goal of applying scientific knowledge to government and improving government output in that way. They thought of policy very mechanistically as inputs and outputs. They weren't sure how to define this new field, but they knew it
