The socio-colonial history of Surinamese surnames applied to a validated surname list to identify ancestry in health research
Around half of the population of Suriname, who are mainly of African and South Asian descent, migrated to the Netherlands at the end of the previous century, where they face higher perinatal and maternal mortality and up to 5 years lower life expectancy than European-Dutch. Analyses by ancestry are needed to address these inequalities, but the law prohibits registration by ancestry. Therefore, a list of Surinamese surnames was compiled and valida…
Mahābhārata and Emergency
Through an analysis of some of the dialogues in a play by Girirāj Kiśor based on the Mahābhārata, this article shows that one of the themes of the play is that of subjects being dominated by a ruler and protesting against that dominance. The analysis also shows how a woman, Draupadī, has conversational power over men in the dialogues in which she participates. In her statements, she identifies with the people rather than the royal family into whi…
Who Would Marry a Strong Woman? A Short Story by Bhagvaticharan Varma

An analysis of characterisation, however, suggests that Varma's story goes against such a stereotypic male evaluation o…
The Present Tense and Internal Focalization of Awareness
It is argued that in internal focalization (e.g., interior monologue or internal sensory perception), the present tense serves to establish a seemingly direct, unmediated link with a character's mind. In reports of actions, too, the present tense may have this effect of providing a link with a character's mind, in the sense that an action reported by the narrator in the present tense may be taken to be internally focalized by the character perfor…
The Erotics of Moonlight and other Connotations in Modern Hindi Literature
As explained by Abrams (1971:32-3), a connotation is ‘the range of secondary or accompanying meanings’ which a word ‘commonly suggests or implies’. The word ‘home’, for example, connotes ‘privacy, intimacy, and coziness’. Which exact secondary meaning from among the range is evoked ‘depends on the particular context in which (the word) is used’. Connotations play an important role in interpreting different types of texts, as shown by Abrams and o…
