  • A spatial point pattern analysis of public and private urban social facilities in Barcelona. A balanced and equitable model?

Open Access•Joan Carles Martori, Raymond Lagonigro et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2026

The expansion of privately provided social facilities has significantly transformed urban service landscapes, rising concerns regarding equity and territorial cohesion. This study investigates whether public and private secondary schools, libraries, and sports facilities in Barcelona exhibit distinct spatial logics, and how these patterns correspond to neighbourhood socioeconomic conditions. Moving beyond conventional area-based approaches, we em…

  • Mapping Urban Environmental Stress in Barcelona: A Multivariate Approach using GWPCA

Open Access•Ferran Oró-Aran, Raymond Lagonigro et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2026

This study develops a spatially explicit Environmental Stress Index (ESI) for Barcelona, integrating six key environmental dimensions (air pollution, noise, thermal stress, population density, park accessibility, and green cover) across 1,068 census tracts. Using Geographically Weighted Principal Component Analysis, the analysis captures local spatial heterogeneity in environmental stress and derives location-specific weights to construct a multi…

  • Spatial distribution of income in cities. Polycentric structure of employment, amenities and spatial effects

Open Access•Rafa Madariaga, Raymond Lagonigro et al.•ARTICLE•Papers of the Regional Science…•2026

This study investigates from a theoretical point of view the spatial distribution of households by income within metropolitan areas, focusing on three key determinants: the polycentric structure of employment, the spatial distribution and accessibility of public amenities, and the presence of spatial interdependencies. Utilizing a novel and comprehensive dataset, we endogenously identify employment centers within the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (…

  • Residential segregation by income: Spatial patterns and multilevel analysis of the six main Spanish metropolitan areas

Open Access•Rafa Madariaga, Raymond Lagonigro et al.•ARTICLE•European Urban and Regional Studies•2025•References: 9

This study examines income segregation in six Spanish metropolitan areas using Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA), global segregation indices and a multilevel modelling approach. By analysing spatial patterns of high- and low-income groups in 2015 and 2021, we identify distinct segregation trends across metropolitan areas. Although results are mixed, low-income clusters tend to shrink, while high-income clusters expand. Global indices…

  • Residential segregation by nationalities: A global and multilevel approach to Barcelona and Madrid (2008–2018)

Open Access•Joan Carles Martori, Rafa Madariaga•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2023•References: 15

This paper analyzes patterns of residential segregation for many nationalities in Barcelona and Madrid during the 2008–2018 period. In the first year, the financial bubble burst, halting the exponential growth of immigrants and in the second, after the great recession, the arrival of immigrant population resumes. The multilevel analysis for the dissimilarity index is applied for the first time to Spanish cities. Complementing the results of globa…

  • Social status and air quality in Barcelona: A socio-ecological approach

Open Access•Joan Carles Martori, Raymond Lagonigro et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2022

During the last two decades, many studies have described the effects of air pollution in urban areas. This paper analyses the spatial patterns of the main air pollutants in the city of Barcelona, i.e. nitrogen dioxide (NO2), fine particulates of less than 2.5μm (PM2.5) and coarse particulates of 10μm (PM10), and explores the factors associated with air quality in relation to the social and environmental characteristics of each area of the city us…

  • Bridging boundaries with Bernstein: Approach, procedure and results of a school support project in Catalonia

    Jordi Collet-Sabé, Joan Carles Martori•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 17

This article presents the theoretical foundations, methodological approach and results of a school support project involving 154 primary school pupils, with low academic performance, in a region of Catalonia (Enxaneta Project). Drawing on the later work of Basic Bernstein, specifically his notion of pedagogic device, the project is based, on a theoretical level, on the use of the notions of classification and framing and of distributive, recontex…
