Emotion meets attention
In the Posner cueing task for exogenous attention orientation, spatial correspondence between the lateralized cue and target is beneficial under conditions of short asynchrony. How such a benefit is modulated by target qualia, like faces expressing either the most positive (happy relative to angry faces in Experiment 1, as well as neutral relative to angry faces in the negative group of Experiment 2) or negative (neutral relative to happy faces i…
An Intersectional Perspective on Age Stereotypes
We analyzed the age stereotypes of heterosexual, gay, and bisexual men and the implications of such stereotypes for the conceptualization of older gay and bisexual men, specifically. In Study 1a (N = 158) and 1b (N = 155), we found that compared to heterosexual men, participants stereotyped gay men more on young- than elderly-stereotypical traits. Participants represented bisexual men not as "somewhere in between" the stereotypes about heterosexu…
Attentional capture in emotion comparison is orientation independent
Recent findings on emotion comparison show a typical pattern of motor reactivity rising from attentional capture. When pairs of emotional faces are presented simultaneously, the most intense emotional face is recognized faster (Emotional Semantic Congruency—ESC effect). Furthermore, a global response speed advantage for emotional pairs with positive rather than negative average emotion intensity is observed (i.e., emotional size effect), with the…
From self to ingroup reclaiming of homophobic epithets
Reappropration of derogatory group labels by minority members is a coping strategy against stigmatisation. The aim of this research is twofold. First, we intend to replicate Galinsky et al.'s findings (2013), suggesting that self-labelling (i.e., the self-referential use of a derogatory group label), compared to outgroup-labelling (i.e., the use of a derogatory group label by an outgroup member), enhances self-power and positively reframes the la…
