Did Pod Save America? A Discourse-Historical Approach of Pod Save America and Left-Wing Alternative Media (2017–2024)
Pod Save America (PSA) is the flagship show of Crooked Media—a venture designed to build liberal media infrastructure and counter the Trump administration in the aftermath of the 2016 election. Drawing on Wodak’s discourse-historical approach (2001), this paper examines interviews and media coverage of the podcast, with particular focus on the “Resistance” movement of 2017 and 2020/2024 elections, to analyze its contested status as an alternative…
Voto Latinx
In the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Donald Trump captured a substantial share of the Latinx vote, renewing debates about identity, media effects, and political behavior. This study examines how nativist attitudes and hyper-conservative media consumption shape support for Trump, with particular attention to racial and national identity. Using a moderated mediation model, we find that nativism and hyper-conservative media consumption both incre…

Local Forms of Everyday Life in Hungary in the Light of Eighteenth–Twentieth-Century Archival Sources
The novelty of historical ethnographic, micro-historical, and historical anthropological research focusing on locality is that it does not examine the vertical stratification of society and does not consider the thematic knowledge constructions arising from this. Instead, research approaches the horizontal: local cultural patterns, life worlds, and everyday life; the opinion-forming role of local intellectuals (priests, pastors, teachers, clerks,…
A Present-day Overview of Research at a 90-year-old University Institute
The introduction to the present issue offers an overview of the list of professors and academics at the Ethnography Institute of the University of Budapest (the predecessor of the present Eötvös Loránd University), founded in 1934. The integration of teaching and research is fundamental to the concept of the university. Following a review of some of the most historically significant academic trends and endeavors, the author outlines the thematic …
On the Boundary Between Religion and Magic
Based on previously unknown archival sources, the study explores the relationship between popular demands related to religious amulets and the Church's responses to them in nineteenth-century Bácska [Bačka]. The multi-ethnic region of Southern Hungary (now largely part of Serbia) offers a diverse range of data in the context of the Roman Catholic Church. The faithful sought material and written amulets primarily in the hope of healing, warding of…
The Lower Clergy and Popular Culture
The aim of this paper is to examine the role of the Christian lower priesthood in local communities in eighteenth–twentieth century Hungary and Transylvania in cultural transmission. The author intends to map out the complex and changing conditions of the social function, everyday life, and mentality of the priests on the bottom rung of the clerical hierarchy. Particular emphasis is placed on the activity of priests active at the focus points of …
Genetic Endowments and Wealth Inequality
We show that genetic endowments linked to educational attainment strongly and robustly predict wealth at retirement. The estimated relationship is not fully explained by flexibly controlling for education and labor income. We therefore investigate a host of additional mechanisms that could account for the gene-wealth gradient, including inheritances, mortality, risk preferences, portfolio decisions, beliefs about the probabilities of macroeconomi…
Exorcism and sexuality
Using contemporary documents, the study presents the story of a scandalous exorcism that took place in 1726-27. At the heart of the Csíkszentgyörgy (Ciucsângeorgiu) case is the local parson and a non-local "possessed" woman. The supreme church authority sought to figure out the details of the months-long case retroactively through testimonies and the correspondence of the priests involved. The demonically possessed woman upset the entire village …
