BACKGROUND: Neurological disorders are increasingly recognised as major causes of death and disability worldwide. The aim of this analysis from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016 is to provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date estimates of the global, regional, and national burden from neurological disorders. METHODS: We estimated prevalence, incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs;…

BACKGROUND: An estimated 863 million people-a third of the world's urban population-live in slums, yet there is little information on the disease burden in these settings, particularly regarding chronic preventable diseases. METHODS: From March to May 2012, we conducted a cluster randomized survey to estimate the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and associated risk factors in a peri-urban shantytown north of Lima, Peru. Field workers…
Transmisión vertical de HTLV-1 en el Perú
Human type 1 T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV-1) infection has been described in many areas of the world, including Caribbean countries, Japan, Africa, Oceania and South America. In this review we define the endemicity of HTLV-1 in the country proposing four epidemiological criteria. Then we discuss the core subject of the review, which is the vertical transmission of HTLV-1. This mechanism is one of the main forms of transmission in our country. …
Diversity of commercial sex among men and male-born trans people in three Peruvian cities

However, in reality little is known about the complexities of this practice in Peru. This paper presents findings from an ethnographic study of the characteristics, patterns and sociocultural aspects of CSMT in th…
SP3-42 Trends and characteristics of self-reported HIV testing in women of childbearing age, in Peru 2000, 2004–2008
Introduction In the 26-year HIV/AIDS epidemic in Peru more than 39 682 cases of HIV and 25 533 cases of AIDS have been reported. Despite a higher concentration of the epidemic in men who have sex with men, there has been transmission to other groups and a decline in the male to female ratio of HIV infection. The objective of our study was to examine trends and factors associated with obtaining HIV testing for women of childbearing age (WCBA). Met…

Interest in global health and opportunities to conduct clinical research at international sites have increased markedly for health profession trainees. With this increase in demand comes an increase in the need for mentors at international and home institutions to provide guidance with designing, implementing and analysing clinical research projects that benefit both the trainees and the research site. In this article, we provide an overview of o…
