  • Inter-ethnic conflict in Broome, Western Australia

    Christine Choo•ARTICLE•Continuum•2011•Cited by: 1

The story of the conflict that erupted into street-fighting and riots in Broome in the northwest of Western Australia between workers of Japanese and other Asian backgrounds engaged in the pearl-fishing industry during the lay-up seasons of 1907, 1914 and 1920 highlights the often overlooked reality of multiple ethnicities of Asians engaged in the pearling industry. Reflection on the causes of the riots, the underlying hegemony, and entrenched ra…

Whereas \nhistorians may doubt that it is possible \nto write history without archival word \nmiddens, archaeologists doubt that one \ncan write without material discoveries. \nSources and methodological expertise \nhave created a major chasm bet…

    Christine Choo•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural Studies•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 3

The search for my Asian ancestors and my discoveries in archives, the crumbling pages, the eroding ink, the disappearance of the word, are a metaphor for the simultaneous emergence of the will to recover memories and the slow fading away of the material traces of memory. Eurasians of Malaysia and Singapore once epitomised the blurring of boundaries between cultures and societies in colonial and immediate post-colonial periods. In exploring their …

Europeans on the coastal areas of northern Australia depended on the work of…

    Christine Choo•ARTICLE•Australian Social Work•1984

The provision of social welfare services by the voluntary sector is largely dependent on government funding. This paper highlights some of the inadequacies of this funding procedure particularly as it affects the quality and conditions of work in the voluntary sector. There is a place for the employment of an experienced professional as consultant to voluntary agencies for the provision of support and supervision of less experienced workers. Fund…
