  • Pain, Gender, and Systems of Belief and Practice

    Open Access•Darlene M Juschka, Darlene Juschka•ARTICLE•Religion Compass•2011•References: 14

In the Eurowest pain is discursively framed as something that eludes discourse and therefore is outside language. In this framing, pain, as outside language, is given a social and a historical status understood to be beyond human construction. This article is the first step in a larger project toward destablizing such a conceptualization of pain and begins by engaging feminist theorizing of body and pain. In this paper my effort is to trouble the…

  • Cane Toads, Taxonomies, Boundaries, and the Comparative Study of Religion

    Darlene M Juschka, Darlene Juschka•ARTICLE•Method & Theory in the Study of…•2004•References: 2

Cane toads are heavily built amphibians that grow up to 15 centimeters (six inches) long. They have warty skin, though females tend to be larger and smoother skinned. They were introduced to Australia 66 years ago [1935] at Gordonvale, North Queensland, by the Australian Bureau of Sugar Experimental Stations, despite warnings from some scientists and naturalists. At the time, two species of beetles were causing dam age to the sugar harvest and it…

    Darlene M Juschka, Darlene Juschka•ARTICLE•Culture and Religion•2001•Cited by: 2•References: 3

The Disney focus and delineation of a particular kind of family—which Disney locates far back in the recesses of a human biological history—is used in order to support what has come to be known as ‘American family values’. This same model of the …

  • The Category of Gender in the Study of Religion

Darlene M Juschka, Darlene Juschka•ARTICLE•Method & Theory in the Study of…•1999

This essay examines how gender has been delineated by feminists in a variety of fields, and studies how John Stratton Hawley and Ursula King incorporate the notion of gender in their titles and as a basis for their studies. The category of gender has become quite popular in the last two decades. The questions are why is it so popular and how useful is it? Gender as a category of analysis is one developed within a hegemonic discourse and therefore…
